ได้ยิน / ได้กลิ่น

Perception Results

Level 2

Use ได้ยิน for hearing and ได้กลิ่น for smelling an odor. The first example contrasts listening with not hearing; the question about odor asks whether the person perceives it.

How It Works

1. Learn the Complete Expressions
The dictionary records ได้ยิน as hear, with a listening/hearing question. The teacher's smelling lesson gives ได้กลิ่นไหม for asking whether an odor is perceived, and ดมน้ำหอมนี้ for smelling perfume. Learn these particular expressions rather than applying a universal active/passive distinction to every sensory sentence.

2. Read the Time Context
The displayed ฉันจะได้ยินเสียงคุณไหม includes จะ and asks about hearing the other person's voice in a prospective situation. Keep ได้ยิน intact here; its initial ได้ does not alone make this sentence past. Compare the separate ได้ entry in its own complete construction rather than transferring its reading into every word containing ได้.

3. Read the Negated Hearing Expression
In the first and third examples, ไม่ precedes the complete hearing expression: ไม่ + ได้ยิน. The requested exercise form is ไม่ได้ยิน. The displayed ได้ยินไม่ได้ does not reproduce that requested order. Compare ไม่ได้ after a verb separately; this lesson does not impose a universal ban on every other hearing construction.

4. Keep Inferred Information Explicit
ฟังแต่ไม่ได้ยิน and พูดดังๆหน่อย ไม่ได้ยิน do not write an explicit subject for the hearing clause. Their ordinary English and Indonesian readings can supply a speaker or an object in context; the translations mark that inference. Do not add a historical claim that bare ยิน is impossible in every modern context.

Examples (4)

  1. ฟังแต่ไม่ได้ยิน

[I] listen, but [I] cannot hear [it].

Word by Word: listen but not hear

The sentence contrasts ฟัง, listening, with ไม่ได้ยิน, not hearing in the given context. The bracketed speaker and object are inferred.

  2. คุณได้กลิ่นเหม็นไหม

Do you smell a bad odor?

Word by Word: you | [perceive an odor] | foul | [question]

The question asks whether the person smells a bad odor; it does not state how the person tried to identify it.

  3. พูดดังๆหน่อย ไม่ได้ยิน

Please speak louder; [I] cannot hear [you].

Word by Word: speak | loud [repeated] | [request particle] | not | hear

ไม่ได้ยิน is the displayed negative hearing expression. The speaker and the object in the translation are inferred; หน่อย is part of the request, not a guarantee of tone or politeness.

  4. ฉันจะได้ยินเสียงคุณไหม

    Will I hear your voice?

Word by Word: I will hear sound you [question]

จะ supplies the prospective context in this question, while ได้ยิน remains the complete hearing expression.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a different order when the exercise requests ไม่ได้ยิน.

    ได้ยินไม่ได้
    ไม่ได้ยิน

Reproduce the requested expression ไม่ได้ยิน, with ไม่ before ได้ยิน. ได้ยินไม่ได้ does not reproduce this form. Interpret inability or lack of hearing from the whole situation rather than declaring one exclusive pattern for every sensory verb.

  • Dropping ได้ when the exercise requests the complete word ได้ยิน.

    ฉันยินเสียง
    ฉันได้ยินเสียง

The exercise requests ฉันได้ยินเสียง. Keep the complete dictionary word ได้ยิน rather than reproducing ฉันยินเสียง. The future example also keeps ได้ยิน; this exercise does not establish a historical or universal ban on every other occurrence of ยิน.

Learn This First

To understand perception results, you need to be familiar with how Thai uses serial verbs to describe the outcome of an action. Specifically, you need to understand how 'ได้' functions as a marker of achievement, indicating that the act of sensing (hearing or smelling) was successful.
