Verb + เจอ

Found It

Level 2

เจอ means find, meet, or encounter. The examples include finding something after a search and coming across someone or something during another activity.

How It Works

1. Find Or Encounter
เจอ means find, meet, or encounter. An encounter need not follow a deliberate search. The mall example describes meeting a friend while walking, while the book example describes coming across information while reading.

2. A Search Without A Find
ฉันหาถุงเท้าไม่เจอ describes searching for socks without finding them. Read หา as the search and ไม่เจอ as the failed finding result in this phrase. The same หาไม่เจอ pattern occurs in the independently read Thai story of a search for a lost axe.

3. A Possible Find
ลองค้นในกระเป๋าดูหรือยัง อาจจะเจอ asks about searching in the bag and then says the object might be found. อาจจะ presents a possibility. The object is understood from the situation; the phrase assigns no numerical probability.

4. Make The Intended Result Clear
The first card asks for “I found it.” ผมหาเจอแล้ว makes that finding explicit. ผมหาแล้ว can report that the search has already been done, so it does not state the selected result as clearly. This is a contrast within the task, not a claim that หา can never mean find.

5. Practise The Negative Target
The other card asks for the failed-result phrase หาไม่เจอ. Its order puts ไม่ before เจอ. Learn that whole target; it does not establish a scope rule for every combination of a verb, a negative, and a following verb.

Examples (4)

  1. ฉันหาถุงเท้าไม่เจอ

    I can't find my socks.

Word by Word: I + search for + socks + not + find

หา names the search for socks, while ไม่เจอ states the failed finding result in this sentence.

  2. เมื่อวานเดินไปเจอเพื่อนที่ห้าง

Yesterday I ran into a friend at the mall.

Word by Word: Yesterday + walk + go + meet + friend + at + mall

The speaker encountered a friend while out walking. เดินไปเจอ describes walking and then meeting someone; it does not mean the speaker was searching for that person.

  3. ลองค้นในกระเป๋าดูหรือยัง อาจจะเจอ

Have you tried searching in the bag yet? You might find it.

    Word by Word: Try + search + in + bag + look + or + yet, + might + will + meet

The word 'เจอ' can stand alone in the second clause because the context of 'searching' was already established.

  4. ผมอ่านเจอเรื่องนี้ในหนังสือ

I came across this matter in a book.

    Word by Word: I + read + meet + story + this + in + book

อ่านเจอ describes encountering the information while reading. The sentence does not require a prior search for that information.

Common Mistakes

  • Make The Finding Explicit In The Requested Sentence.

    ผมหาแล้ว
    ผมหาเจอแล้ว

For the requested “I found it,” use ผมหาเจอแล้ว to make the finding explicit. ผมหาแล้ว can say that the search has already been done without stating that result. This task does not claim that every use of หา excludes the meaning find.

  • Use หาไม่เจอ For The Requested Failed-Search Result.

    ไม่หาเจอ
    หาไม่เจอ

The selected “search but cannot find” target is หาไม่เจอ, with ไม่ before เจอ. ไม่หาเจอ does not reproduce that displayed negative-result phrase. The comparison does not define every possible negative scope in Thai verb sequences.
