โดน
Receiving an Action with โดน
In these examples, โดน introduces an action received by the subject: someone is fired or scolded, a car is stolen, and food is eaten. These events do not establish a rule that every use must express harm or annoyance.
How It Works
โดน marks the affected participant in the displayed constructions. The verbs ดุ, ขโมย, and กิน retain their written forms here.
1. Read the Action and Context
Scolding, firing, and theft give these examples adverse meanings. That is not an exclusive meaning rule for โดน: the attested pairing โดนชมบ้างโดนด่าบ้าง includes both praise and insult. A phrase about being invited does not by itself prove that the person was forced to attend or disliked the invitation. ได้รับ is used in the exercise's requested invitation wording; receiving an action is not limited to pleasant outcomes.
2. Compare the Displayed Patterns
- รถ + โดน + ขโมย: the car receives the stealing action.
- ฉัน + โดน + แม่ + ดุ: mother performs the scolding.
แม่ occurs between โดน and ดุ in this sentence. No separate by-word appears in this pattern; do not insert โดย between โดน and the dog in the second exercise's requested phrase.
3. Keep the Alternatives Separate
ถูก also introduces a received action in other constructions. These links are comparisons, not a rule that style or a positive-versus-negative label automatically selects one marker. In the food example, หมด expresses all of the food being eaten and แล้ว places that result in the selected already-completed reading. Annoyance is not stated. The past English renderings of the other examples are selected contexts, not tense endings supplied by โดน.
Examples (4)
- เขาโดนไล่ออก
He got fired.
Word by Word: He + [passive] + dismiss from a job
In the selected employment context, ไล่ออก means dismiss from a job. It can refer to driving someone out in another context. He and the past English reading are selected here; the Thai clause has no past-tense ending.
- ฉันโดนแม่ดุ
I got scolded by my mother.
Word by Word: I + [passive] + [my] mother + scold
ฉัน receives the scolding and แม่ performs it. Mother stands between โดน and ดุ in this displayed pattern; the possessor my and the past English reading come from the selected family context.
- รถโดนขโมย
The car was stolen.
Word by Word: Car + [passive] + steal
รถ is the thing affected by ขโมย in this clause. The selected completed-theft context supplies the English past reading; this sentence does not impose an owner's feelings as a condition for using โดน.
- กับข้าวโดนกินหมดแล้ว
The food was all eaten already.
Word by Word: Food + [passive] + eat + all + already
กับข้าว refers to food or dishes for a meal here. หมด gives the all-eaten result and แล้ว supports the selected already reading. Whether the speaker is annoyed requires further context.
Common Mistakes
Not using the requested ได้รับเชิญ invitation phrase.
ฉันโดนเชิญไปงานแต่งงานฉันได้รับเชิญไปงานแต่งงานFor this task, say I received an invitation to a wedding with ฉันได้รับเชิญไปงานแต่งงาน. The alternative ฉันโดนเชิญไปงานแต่งงาน can describe being invited in context; it does not automatically mean punishment, forced attendance, or dislike. The task selects a phrase, not a universal ban on โดน with pleasant events.
Inserting โดย inside the requested โดน + dog + bite pattern.
เขาโดนโดยหมากัดเขาโดนหมากัดUse the exact requested เขาโดนหมากัด, with หมา as the doer of กัด between โดน and the verb. เขาโดนโดยหมากัด inserts โดย into that pattern. This placement correction does not make โดย exclusive to formal writing or forbid its other by/with constructions.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand โดน, you need to be comfortable with basic Thai sentence structure and the concept of the passive voice (where something happens to the subject). It is mostly used for unwelcome outcomes in casual speech.
- ถูกHad It Done to You
โดน works like the passive ถูก (โดนดุ and ถูกดุ both mean 'got scolded'), but it sounds more casual and usually describes something unwelcome. Knowing ถูก first makes โดน a small step.
Level 2 - Verbs In A Row
โดน functions as a marker placed before another verb (e.g., โดนดุ), which follows the logic of stacking verbs to modify the meaning of the action.
