Counting and Describing with อัน
ไม้บรรทัดสองอัน counts two rulers with อัน. อันนี้ and อันนั้น identify a particular item in the next examples. In ของอันล้ำค่า, อัน connects the thing to its description as precious. Learn these complete constructions instead of treating อัน as a replacement for every classifier.
How It Works
1. Count the Displayed Objects
ไม้บรรทัดสองอัน means two rulers. Read the ruler noun, the number สอง, and the classifier อัน in the displayed order. Compare the linked counting pattern in its complete examples. Classifier choice depends on the noun and construction; these examples do not make อัน a universal substitute based only on an object’s size or shape.
2. Identify the Item
In เอาอันนี้สองอัน, อันนี้ identifies the item and สองอัน gives the count. In แปรงสีฟันอันนั้นของใคร, อันนั้น identifies that toothbrush. Interpret the pointing expression in context rather than assuming it is interchangeable with every standalone demonstrative.
3. Read the Written One-Item Form
ขอไม้บรรทัดอันนึง requests one ruler. The native example writes อันนึง, corresponding to อันหนึ่ง for one item. This explanation records the written form; it does not specify an unrecorded pronunciation or claim that nearly every speaker contracts it.
4. A Describing Use
In ของอันล้ำค่า, อัน links ของ, a thing, to ล้ำค่า, precious. Compare the linked ที่ examples for another relative construction, without assuming every occurrence can be exchanged between the two forms.
5. The Two Requested Classifiers
The first exercise requests แมวสามตัว with ตัว for cats. The second requests แก้วหนึ่งใบ with ใบ for a drinking glass. Replacing those requested classifiers with อัน does not reproduce the constructions being practiced. These tasks do not establish that every use for a living referent is dehumanizing or that every flat object must use ใบ; the ruler example itself uses อัน.
Examples (5)
- ไม้บรรทัดสองอัน
Two rulers
Word by Word: ruler two [classifier]
The displayed ruler phrase puts สอง before the classifier อัน. It counts two rulers without a rule that every small or flat object selects the same classifier.
- เอาอันนี้สองอัน
[I] take two of these.
Word by Word: take this-one two [classifier]
อันนี้ identifies the item being selected, and สองอัน gives the count. The translation supplies an inferred first-person subject in brackets; the native phrase does not name the speaker.
- ขอไม้บรรทัดอันนึง
Can I have a ruler?
Word by Word: request ruler one-[classifier]
The request uses the written form อันนึง for one ruler. No audio or frequency of shortening is specified by this written example.
- แปรงสีฟันอันนั้นของใคร
Whose is that toothbrush?
Word by Word: toothbrush that-[classifier] of who
อันนั้น identifies the particular toothbrush, and ของใคร asks whose it is.
- ของอันล้ำค่า
A precious thing
Word by Word: thing that precious
Here อัน links ของ, a thing, to the description ล้ำค่า, precious. It is a relative describing use rather than the classifier after a number.
Common Mistakes
Not using ตัว in the requested cat-counting phrase.
แมวสามอันแมวสามตัวThe task requests แมวสามตัว, with ตัว after สาม. แมวสามอัน does not reproduce that requested counting construction. Compare คน for the linked people examples separately; this task does not classify all living referents or make a universal judgment about rudeness.
Not using ใบ in the requested drinking-glass phrase.
แก้วหนึ่งอันแก้วหนึ่งใบThe task requests แก้วหนึ่งใบ with ใบ as the classifier for the drinking glass. แก้วหนึ่งอัน does not reproduce that requested phrase. Learn the noun-specific linked examples rather than inferring that all containers or all flat objects must select the same classifier.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand 'อัน', you first need to grasp the general concept of classifiers in Thai and the word order used when counting or pointing at objects.
