Repeated Nouns in Counting
คนสามคน, ห้องห้าห้อง, ประเทศสองประเทศ and ปัญหาห้าปัญหา repeat a noun around a number. The duration example contains สามวัน without an earlier วัน.
How It Works
Read the five counts.
คนสามคน means three people. In บ้านหลังนี้มีห้องห้าห้อง, ห้อง occurs before and after ห้า to express five rooms; หลัง accompanies บ้าน in the phrase for this house. The retained travel example contains ประเทศสองประเทศ, and the problem example contains ปัญหาห้าปัญหา. These displayed phrases repeat the noun after the number in the classifier position.
เขาทำงานที่นี่มาสามวัน contains สามวัน, three days, within a duration phrase. มา participates in that duration reading rather than a physical coming event. In the archived travel wording เราไปเที่ยวมาประเทศสองประเทศ, the translation selects a completed trip; it preserves that surface wording without making it a model for every travel clause or assigning a formal register.
Repeated nouns are not the only counting option. The selected dictionary problem example uses ปัญหา with หลายข้อ. Compare each complete phrase rather than treating all Thai nouns as uncountable or inventing a mandatory repetition rule. The linked อัน entry has its own contexts; this entry does not impose a universal ban on that classifier.
The first exercise specifically requests มีปัญหาห้าปัญหา, five problems. Its retained alternative มีสามอันปัญหา includes สาม, three, so the two strings also differ in quantity. The second exercise requests สามห้อง, three rooms, rather than ห้องสาม read as the label Room 3. These are exact contextual tasks, not universal claims about ordinal numbers, frequency or social style.
Examples (5)
- คนสามคน
Three people
Word by Word: person | three | person as classifier
In คนสามคน, คน occurs on both sides of สาม. The phrase counts three people without establishing who they are.
- บ้านหลังนี้มีห้องห้าห้อง
This house has five rooms.
Word by Word: house | classifier หลัง | this | have | room | five | room as classifier
บ้านหลังนี้ identifies this house, and ห้องห้าห้อง gives a count of five rooms. The two occurrences of ห้อง are the displayed counting pattern; the sentence is an example, not a verified property record.
- เราไปเที่ยวมาประเทศสองประเทศ
We traveled to two countries.
Word by Word: we | go traveling | มา in the selected completed-trip reading | country | two | country as classifier
The archived เราไปเที่ยวมาประเทศสองประเทศ contains ประเทศสองประเทศ. This functional translation selects a completed trip and we excluding the listener. The unusual retained surface wording is not a general travel template; มา is not translated as a separate physical coming event here.
- เขาทำงานที่นี่มาสามวัน
He has worked here for three days.
Word by Word: he | work | at here | มา marking duration up to the reference time | three | day
The selected reading of เขาทำงานที่นี่มาสามวัน describes work lasting three days up to the contextual reference time. สามวัน is a duration expression without a preceding repeated วัน; this does not establish a rule for every time expression or verify real employment.
- เขามีปัญหาห้าปัญหาที่ต้องแก้
He has five problems that must be solved.
Word by Word: he | have | problem | five | problem as classifier | that | must | solve
ปัญหาห้าปัญหา counts five problems in เขามีปัญหาห้าปัญหาที่ต้องแก้. ต้อง supplies must in the relative clause; the solver is not separately stated. Repetition is this displayed choice, not the only possible way to count problems.
Common Mistakes
Not reproducing the requested five-problem phrase.
มีสามอันปัญหามีปัญหาห้าปัญหาThe exercise requests มีปัญหาห้าปัญหา, five problems. The retained มีสามอันปัญหา uses สาม, three, and อัน, so it does not reproduce the requested quantity or wording. This exact task does not establish a universal ban on อัน or make noun repetition mandatory in every context.
Using a room label for the requested room quantity.
ห้องสามสามห้องThe task requests สามห้อง for three rooms. ห้องสาม can identify Room 3 in a room-label context and is not intrinsically invalid. Choose the requested quantity; do not treat the room label as the same count.

Learn This First
To understand nouns that count themselves, a learner must first grasp the general Thai counting structure (Noun + Number + Classifier) and the fundamental role that classifiers play in the language.
