ซึ่ง

Relative Clauses with ซึ่ง

Level 2

ซึ่ง (sûeng - falling tone) can introduce a relative clause translated with 'which', 'who', or 'that'. Compare it with ที่ (thîi), another relative marker. The examples here show descriptions of nouns and a comment about a preceding event; the two markers are not automatically interchangeable in every construction.

How It Works

1. Comparing Relative Markers
In Thai grammar, relative markers can correspond to English 'which', 'who', or 'that'. Compare ที่ (another relative marker), ซึ่ง, and อัน (with separate relative and classifier uses). Read the complete construction before choosing a marker; these words are not interchangeable in every sentence.

2. Transitions and Fixed Expressions
A clause beginning with ซึ่ง can also connect to what was just said (e.g., ซึ่งแบบว่า... - 'which is like...', or ซึ่งก็คือ... - 'which is...'). Distinguish relative clauses from fixed expressions such as ซึ่งกันและกัน (each other) and ซึ่งหน้า (face-to-face / in plain sight, e.g., ความผิดซึ่งหน้า - a flagrant offense), whose interpretation comes from the whole expression. The spelling 'ซึ่ง' does not make all these expressions one object-marking construction; Point 5 treats separate verb patterns.

3. Non-Restrictive Clauses
In linguistics, a 'non-restrictive' clause adds extra information that isn't strictly necessary to identify the noun. A clause introduced by ซึ่ง can add such a comment, but the marker alone does not establish that the clause is non-restrictive. Read the whole noun phrase and context.

4. Modifying Complex Ideas
Compare ที่ in noun-modifying clauses with the example here, where ซึ่ง refers back to a preceding event. For example, in 'เขามาสาย ซึ่งทำให้ฉันโกรธ' (He came late, which made me angry), ซึ่ง refers to the entire event of him being late. The example can also contain the particle ก็ (gâw) in these situations (e.g., ซึ่งก็ทำให้ฉันโกรธ) to link the consequence back to the previous clause.

5. The 'Maintain' and 'Cause' Patterns
In the separate patterns here, ซึ่ง follows verbs such as รักษาไว้ (rák-sǎa wái - to maintain/preserve) or นำมา (nam maa - to bring/lead to) to introduce the object: รักษาไว้ซึ่ง... (to maintain [the state of]...) or นำมาซึ่ง... (to lead to/bring about...). Note that in these specific phrases, ซึ่ง marks what the verb maintains or brings about (บุพบท), rather than introducing a clause describing a noun. Treat this as a separate construction, not evidence that every fixed expression containing the word has an identical function or that Thai has a general accusative-case marker.

6. Describing a Place
In สถานที่ซึ่งฉันเกิด (the place where I was born), สถานที่ names the place and ซึ่ง introduces the clause ฉันเกิด. The phrase identifies the place of the speaker's birth. When comparing สถานที่ซึ่ง with สถานที่ที่, or ที่ซึ่ง with ที่ที่, read each as part of a complete place-relative construction. Repeated ที่ is not by itself a grammatical error. Distinguish the relative marker ที่ from ที่ used for location. These comparisons do not make ที่ and ซึ่ง interchangeable in every sentence.

7. Referring to People and Things
Unlike English, which distinguishes between 'who' for people and 'which' for things, ซึ่ง can be used for both people (who/whom) and things (which). When referring to people, the element ผู้ can combine with it as ผู้ซึ่ง (who).

8. Common Collocations
The describing clause after ซึ่ง can contain predicates such as เป็น (to be), มี (to have), or ทำให้ (to cause/make).

9. Avoid Word-for-Word Preposition Patterns
English preposition-plus-'which' constructions do not supply a Thai word order rule. With ซึ่ง, do not assemble 'the box in which' word-for-word as 'กล่องในซึ่ง'. Express the location relation in a complete Thai construction; this warning concerns the attempted translation here rather than every possible preposition sequence.

10. Retain the Marker in These Patterns
English can omit 'which' in an object relative such as 'The book [which] I read'. Keep ซึ่ง when practicing the constructions shown here. Do not infer omission from pronoun dropping, which concerns a different grammatical role; Thai relative-marker omission depends on the particular construction.

Examples (5)

  1. โครงการซึ่งเริ่มปีนี้ได้รับความสนใจมาก

The project, which started this year, has received a lot of interest.

Word by Word: Project which start year this receive interest much

In this written example, ซึ่ง introduces the clause describing the project. The full context determines whether the description identifies the project or adds information about it.

  2. เขาสองคนรักซึ่งกันและกัน

The two of them love each other.

Word by Word: They two person love each other

This uses the fixed expression ซึ่งกันและกัน (each other). Read the reciprocal expression as a whole rather than assigning ซึ่ง its relative-clause function here.

  3. สถานที่ซึ่งฉันเกิด

The place where I was born.

Word by Word: Place which I born

ซึ่ง introduces the clause describing the place of birth. It also avoids the repeated marker sequence in 'สถานที่ที่' (sa-thǎan-thîi thîi), but repetition alone is not an error or a guarantee of an inappropriate style.

  4. บุคคลซึ่งมีอายุต่ำกว่าสิบแปดปี

Persons who are under eighteen years of age.

Word by Word: Person which have age lower than ten eight year

Here, ซึ่ง introduces an age description of people. Compare the different wording with คน + ที่; the choice involves the whole noun phrase and context rather than replacing a universally casual pronoun.

  5. ฝนตกหนักมาก ซึ่งทำให้การจราจรติดขัด

It rained very hard, which caused the traffic to be jammed.

Word by Word: Rain fall heavy very which cause make traffic stuck

In this case, ซึ่ง refers back to the entire preceding clause (the fact that it rained hard) rather than just a single noun.

Common Mistakes

  • Say “The Place Where I Was Born”.

    สถานที่ซึ่งเขาเกิด
    สถานที่ซึ่งฉันเกิด

สถานที่ซึ่งฉันเกิด means “the place where I was born” in this task. สถานที่ซึ่งเขาเกิด identifies the birthplace of another person in this contrast, so it changes the requested meaning. Both phrases are grammatical and use ซึ่ง; ฉัน identifies the speaker in the requested phrase. Choosing ซึ่ง rather than ที่ is a separate wording choice.

  • Confusing the spelling of the relative marker with the word for 'deeply moved'.

    ฉันรู้สึกซึ่งมาก
    ฉันรู้สึกซึ้งมาก

ซึ่ง is the relative marker in this entry. ซึ้ง is the word for being deeply touched or impressed. The corrected string uses the latter spelling to describe a feeling; the two words differ in spelling and standard tone.
