ยัง (บุพบท)
To — Literary Destination
ยัง can mark the destination or target of a directed action, as in ไปยัง followed by a place. This use differs from ยัง meaning still.
How It Works
ยัง can introduce a destination or target. This is different from ยัง meaning still.
1. Find The Destination
เดินทางไปยังกรุงเทพมหานคร places Bangkok after ไปยัง. The DLTV royal-travel handout also uses ไปยัง before a named destination, and the university dictionary uses ไปยังย่างกุ้ง in a non-royal travel account. The construction is not confined to royal persons.
2. Read The Complete Directed Action
เสด็จยังต่างประเทศ uses the royal motion verb เสด็จ. ส่งความปรารถนาดีมายังท่าน directs good wishes to the addressee. เขาทอดสายตายังท้องทะเล directs his gaze toward the sea. Each complete phrase supplies the action as well as the target; ยัง alone does not mean go.
3. Compare Other Words In Their Own Sentences
ถึง has a reaching sense as well as other uses. Do not infer arrival, entry, or a fixed difference in emphasis from the choice of ยัง, ถึง, or สู่ alone. Read the whole travel statement.
4. Read The Style In Context
The attested examples include a royal-language handout and a historical movement account. They show uses of the construction, rather than proving how often each genre or style uses it. The wishes example is a directed greeting; it is not identified here as a prescribed letter closing.
Examples (4)
- เสด็จยังต่างประเทศ
[A royal person] travels to a foreign country.
Word by Word: travel (royal) to foreign country
เสด็จ is a royal motion verb. ยัง introduces the destination; the surrounding report identifies the royal person and the time.
- ส่งความปรารถนาดีมายังท่าน
Sending good wishes unto you.
Word by Word: send [nominalizer] wish good come to you (polite)
มายังท่าน directs the good wishes to the addressee. The sentence does not itself identify a letter-closing formula.
- เขาทอดสายตายังท้องทะเล
He cast his gaze toward the vast sea.
Word by Word: he cast eye-line to expanse sea
ทอดสายตา describes casting a gaze, and ยัง introduces the sea as its target.
- เดินทางไปยังกรุงเทพมหานคร
Traveling to Bangkok.
Word by Word: travel go to Bangkok (formal name)
ไปยัง precedes กรุงเทพมหานคร, the destination of the travel.
Common Mistakes
Leaving out the motion verb before a destination.
ผมจะยังบ้านผมจะกลับบ้านThe first sentence does not supply a motion verb. If the intended message is 'I will return home', the second sentence uses กลับ ('return'). To express going to a destination, a motion verb is needed; formal ยัง does not replace that verb.
How It Connects
Learn This First
The pattern 'ยัง' functions as a formal or literary preposition meaning 'to' or 'towards' a destination. To understand its usage, learners should already be familiar with basic prepositions of place, verbs of motion, and the concept that Thai uses different vocabulary for formal written narratives compared to everyday speech.
- ไป / มาGo and Come
The pattern 'ยัง' is used to mark the destination of verbs of motion, so understanding basic movement verbs is a prerequisite.
Level 1 - Speech And Writing Differ
Since 'ยัง' (to) is specifically a literary or formal written marker, the learner needs to understand the distinction between spoken and written Thai registers.
