กู / มึง
Blunt I and You
กู means I or me, and มึง means you. The examples show affectionate, challenging, and everyday readings; the pronouns alone do not prove the speaker’s intention.
How It Works
Compare these forms with Thai pronouns. กู identifies the speaker and มึง addresses the listener. They carry social meaning beyond English I and you.
Relationship And Context
The affectionate กูรักมึงนะเพื่อน and the challenging มึงเป็นใครวะ show different readings. A study of teenager speech describes in-group solidarity alongside outsiders’ judgments of impoliteness. This does not make these forms appropriate with every friend, nor does it establish a rule for every age, gender, family, or social class. Do not infer intimacy, hostility, or the removal of hierarchy from the pronouns alone.
Pronouns And Particles
Both pronouns occur together in several displayed clauses, but a reciprocal pairing is not a requirement established here. Read particles in their full clause. The first example includes นะ, and the second includes วะ. Neither particle alone proves affection or anger. ครับ or ค่ะ does not automatically make every choice of pronoun polite. Conversely, their combination with กู or มึง is not a universal grammatical impossibility. The first exercise specifically asks for address using พี่.
Other Ways To Refer To People
The linked แก is another pronoun to compare in its own context; it is not a guaranteed softer replacement. In the second exercise, the speaker uses กู and มึง but is asked to refer respectfully to the listener’s mother. The displayed correction chooses เขา instead of มัน. This is a task about the intended reference and tone, not a claim that มัน has only one set of possible referents.
Groups, Possession, And Self-Reference
พวก adds a group reading: พวกกู refers to the speaker’s group, and พวกมึง to the addressed group. Whether Indonesian uses kami or kita for พวกกู depends on whether the listener is included. ของ connects possession or association in เรื่องของกู, literally my business. None of your business is a dismissive contextual reading. ตัวกูเอง means myself; ตัว is functional in this self-reference, not a statement about a physical body. Compare leaving a pronoun unspoken where the participants are understood; this entry sets no required omission rate.
Using The Examples
The displayed wording helps you recognize possible meanings. It does not certify a relationship, make a particle compulsory, or prescribe a frequency of use. When choosing how to address someone, consider their own accepted forms and the actual situation.
Examples (6)
- กูรักมึงนะเพื่อน
I love you, friend.
Word by Word: I | love | you | [particle นะ] | friend
Read this as affectionate speech to a friend in the selected context. The clause does not establish everyone’s permission to use these pronouns.
- มึงเป็นใครวะ
Who the hell are you?
Word by Word: you | be | who | [particle วะ]
The English and Indonesian choose a confrontational reading of this question. The added swear wording represents its selected force, not a separate Thai lexical item.
- กูหิวแล้ว ไปหาอะไรกินกัน
I’m hungry now. Let’s go find something to eat.
Word by Word: I | hungry | [แล้ว: now/already here] | go | find | something | eat | together
แล้ว presents hunger as the current state here. ไปหาอะไรกินกัน is rendered as an invitation to find food together; the pronoun does not prove how close the participants are.
- พวกมึงจะไปไหนกัน
Where are you all going?
Word by Word: group | you | will | go | where | [กัน: group participation here]
พวกมึง addresses a group. จะ gives the selected prospective reading; the question does not specify each person’s destination or relationship to the speaker.
- เรื่องของกู
My business. / None of your business.
Word by Word: business | of | me
เรื่องของกู refers to the speaker’s business. The dismissive English and Indonesian alternative requires that conversational context.
- ตัวกูเอง
Myself.
Word by Word: [ตัว: self-reference] | me | self
This phrase emphasizes the speaker themself. Keep the first-person meaning in Indonesian aku sendiri.
Common Mistakes
For this greeting task, keep respectful address with พี่ in both clauses.
สวัสดีครับพี่ มึงสบายดีไหมสวัสดีครับพี่ พี่สบายดีไหมThe requested greeting is สวัสดีครับพี่ พี่สบายดีไหม: hello, phi; how are you? The first version switches from พี่ to มึง. In this task, repeat พี่ to preserve the intended address. This is not a universal prohibition on combining มึง with ครับ or speaking across ages.
For this task, ask about the listener’s mother using the requested respectful reference.
กูไปเจอแม่มึงมา มันสบายดีไหมกูไปเจอแม่มึงมา เขาสบายดีไหมBoth versions begin กูไปเจอแม่มึงมา, rendered here as I went to see your mother. The correction asks เขาสบายดีไหม, is she well?, instead of using มัน for her. Choose เขา for this requested tone; กู and มึง in the preceding clause do not require มัน afterward. This does not restrict มัน to peers, lower-status people, or animals in every context.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand 'กู / มึง', you first need to understand the concept of register in Thai pronouns. These are the most informal and blunt forms of 'I' and 'you', sitting at the opposite end of the spectrum from polite pronouns like 'ผม' and 'คุณ'. Using them requires a firm grasp of social hierarchy and relationship closeness to avoid causing offense.
