No Capital Letters And Thai Spacing
Thai letters have no uppercase and lowercase forms. Words are normally written without a space between every word; spaces can mark larger units and have other prescribed uses.
How It Works
1. No Capital Letters
Thai letters do not have uppercase and lowercase forms. Sentence beginnings and names are therefore not marked by a change of letter case. Font size or a paragraph layout is a separate presentation choice, not capitalization. Read the words and context to identify names; the Bangkok example below does not give its names special uppercase forms.
2. Read Spaces In Context
Thai normally writes words continuously rather than placing a space between each one. Spaces can separate larger units. Royal Society guidance distinguishes a larger space between complete sentences from smaller spaces in specified contexts, including clauses, list items, a person's given name and surname, and Thai text next to foreign-script text. Its widths are typographic guidance, not a rule to press a digital space key exactly twice. A space does not always end a sentence, and a line break alone need not end one either. Do not treat a leading vowel sign or the mark ์ as a reliable word-boundary marker.
3. Spacing Around Marks
The repetition mark ๆ repeats preceding text; read the complete expression for its meaning. The spacing guidance places spaces before and after it. The second example and the spacing task below show that convention. This lesson does not establish a universal digital-writing frequency or a pronunciation rule. The abbreviation mark ฯ and the 'and so forth' mark ฯลฯ have their own uses and spacing conventions; consult their linked entries rather than treating every mark as a sentence ending.
4. Punctuation Also Occurs
Thai text can contain periods, commas, question marks, parentheses, quotation marks, and other punctuation. A claim that Thai never uses these marks is too broad. Question words and particles such as ไหม, หรือ, and ทำไม help express questions; this does not prohibit a question mark. Periods occur in abbreviations, for example พ.ศ., and in decimal notation such as 10.50; commas can group digits, as in 1,000. The first practice pair asks for the version without a sentence-final period in this spacing exercise. It does not make a period an error in every Thai text.
Examples (5)
- ฉันไปตลาด แม่ทำอาหาร
I go to the market. Mom makes food.
Word by Word: I go market [space] mother make food
The space separates the two complete clauses in this example. The Thai text uses no sentence-final period here, and แม่ is not capitalized. This illustrates this example's layout, not a ban on periods in all Thai writing.
- เขากินบ่อย ๆ เพราะเขาหิว
He eats often because he is hungry.
Word by Word: He eat often [repetition] [space] because he hungry
The spaces before and after the repetition mark ๆ follow the Royal Society spacing guidance. The example shows that convention; it does not establish how often writers choose another spacing style.
- กรุงเทพมหานครเป็นเมืองหลวงของประเทศไทย
Bangkok is the capital of Thailand.
Word by Word: Bangkok is city capital of Thailand
The names represented in English as 'Bangkok' and 'Thailand' have no special uppercase Thai forms. This is a distinction about letter case, not a claim that all font or layout choices are identical.
- สมชาย ใจดี เป็นครู
Somchai Jaidee is a teacher.
Word by Word: Somchai [space] Jaidee is teacher
The space between สมชาย and ใจดี separates the given name and surname, following the cited spacing guidance. That space is inside a single sentence; it does not signal a sentence ending.
- ฉันชอบกิน apple มาก
I like eating apples a lot.
Word by Word: I like eat [space] apple [space] very
The Latin-script word apple is separated from the surrounding Thai text by spaces in this example, following the cited mixed-script spacing guidance. The example is a mixed-script sentence, not a claim that apple is a Thai word.
Common Mistakes
Keeping the sentence-final period when this exercise asks for the version without it.
วันนี้อากาศดีมาก.วันนี้อากาศดีมากFor this exercise, choose วันนี้อากาศดีมาก without the final period. The other version includes a period and does not match that requested layout. Periods do occur in Thai texts, so the pair is not evidence that a sentence-final period is always incorrect.
Omitting the space after the repetition mark in the spacing convention practised here.
มาก ๆครับมาก ๆ ครับIn this exercise, มาก ๆ ครับ follows the spacing guidance by placing a space before and after the repetition mark ๆ. มาก ๆครับ lacks the space after it. Apply this stated convention to the task rather than assuming that every symbol follows one identical spacing rule.
