Dotted Abbreviations
Thai dotted abbreviations (คำย่อ) shorten written expressions. The examples here use น. for นาฬิกา, ก.ค. for กรกฎาคม, พ.ศ. for พุทธศักราช, รพ. for โรงพยาบาล, and ทล. for ทางหลวง. Read the expansion requested in the exercise; some accepted abbreviations of long names also have letter-by-letter readings.
How It Works
1. Read the Expansion in Context
The writing guidelines give full-word reading as the general instruction, illustrated by น. read as นาฬิกา in a time expression. They also explicitly allow accepted abbreviations of very long names to be read by letters, giving ก.พ. read กอ-พอ. Therefore “always full, never letters” is too broad. The exercise here specifically asks for โรงพยาบาล as the expansion of รพ., rather than the names of its letters.
2. Compare the Displayed Formation Rules
The guidelines use the first consonant for a single word, such as จังหวัด → จ., and allow another syllable’s initial when one letter would be confusing, as ตำรวจ → ตร. For compounds, the displayed examples include ชั่วโมง → ชม. and โรงเรียน → รร. In a syllable with silent ห, use the pronounced consonant, as ทางหลวง → ทล.; compare the linked leading consonant spelling. For a consonant cluster, the guidelines use its first letter, illustrated by ประกาศนียบัตร → ป. These are formation guidelines with established exceptions, not a formula for inventing every abbreviation from any word.
3. Keep the Dots in the Established Form
For two or more letters the guidelines give one final dot, while retaining forms already in use, including พ.ศ.. They also give vowel-containing established forms such as เม.ย. and โทร. In this exercise, reproduce รพ. rather than adding a dot after each letter. Do not infer a historical date or a frequency ranking from the different shapes.
4. Keep Blocks Together
Write the displayed July abbreviation as ก.ค., without an internal space. Separate different abbreviation blocks, as in ศ. ดร., and keep the space before น. in the displayed time expression. These are separate spacing instructions; “a space only before” would omit the rule about different blocks. The linked short abbreviation mark is a separate device to study in its own complete examples, rather than treating it as an interchangeable dot.
Examples (4)
- คลินิกเปิดทำการเวลา 08.00 น.
The clinic opens at 08:00 hours.
Word by Word: clinic opens-for-business at zero-eight point zero-zero [o'clock]
In this time expression, น. expands to นาฬิกา. Read that word for this example rather than the letter name. The sentence keeps a space before the abbreviation.
- เขาเกิดเดือน ก.ค. พ.ศ. 2530
He was born in July, B.E. 2530 (1987).
Word by Word: he born month July Buddhist Era two five three zero
ก.ค. expands to กรกฎาคม and พ.ศ. to พุทธศักราช. Preserve their established dots and the space between the two blocks. Here B.E. 2530 corresponds to C.E. 1987.
- เขาทำงานที่ รพ. รัฐ
He works at a public hospital.
Word by Word: he do work at hospital state
รพ. expands to โรงพยาบาล in this sentence. Its two letters have one final dot; preserve that displayed form rather than adding a dot after ร.
- ขับรถบน ทล. ต้องระวัง
Driving on the highway requires caution.
Word by Word: drive car on highway must careful
ทล. expands to ทางหลวง. The guidelines’ own example uses ล, the pronounced consonant in หลวง, instead of silent leading ห.
Common Mistakes
Reading letter names when the exercise requests the expansion โรงพยาบาล.
เขาไป รพ. (Read as: khao bpai ror-por)เขาไป รพ. (Read as: khao bpai roong-pá-yaa-baan)For this task, read รพ. as โรงพยาบาล in เขาไป รพ. The original row’s ror-por is the letter reading and does not meet the requested expansion. This is not a universal ban on letter-by-letter reading of every Thai abbreviation.
Adding an internal dot when the exercise requests รพ.
เขาทำงานที่ ร.พ.เขาทำงานที่ รพ.Reproduce the displayed hospital abbreviation รพ. with one final dot. ร.พ. changes this requested spelling. Other established forms, such as พ.ศ., retain their own dots; the exercise does not erase those exceptions.
Splitting the displayed July abbreviation with an internal space.
เดือน ก. ค. อากาศร้อนเดือน ก.ค. อากาศร้อนWrite the single abbreviation block ก.ค. together. ก. ค. splits it. A space before this block and a space between different blocks are separate requirements; neither means inserting a space within ก.ค.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand dotted abbreviations, you need a firm grasp of the Thai script and how it handles punctuation. Unlike English, which uses capitalization, Thai uses dots after specific consonants to shorten formal terms like months, time markers, and titles.
- No Capital Letters And Thai Spacing
Thai does not use capitalization to signal abbreviations; instead, it relies on specific punctuation (dots), which contrasts with English conventions.
Foundations - The Six-Hour Clock
One of the most common uses of dotted abbreviations in Thai is for time notation (น. for นาฬิกา), making familiarity with time-telling concepts helpful.

Level 6 - พ.ศ.The Buddhist Era
The displayed พ.ศ. retains its established dots and expands to พุทธศักราช.
Level 6 - Leading Consonants
The ทางหลวง → ทล. example uses pronounced ล rather than silent ห; study the original leading-letter spelling separately.
Level 5 - Consonant Clusters
The writing guidelines use the first letter of a cluster in their abbreviation example; this does not change how the full word’s cluster is pronounced.
