๏
Fongman Opener
The mark ๏, called ฟองมัน, appears before the displayed poetic lines. It is a punctuation mark, different from the Thai digit ๐.
How It Works
Read the Displayed Openers:
All three excerpts begin with ๏ before their Thai words. The mark is called ฟองมัน. It can mark an opening in literary text; the stored excerpts do not establish one universal paragraph, stanza, or chapter hierarchy.
Keep the Characters Distinct:
๏ is the punctuation character Fongman. ๐ is the Thai digit zero. In the money card, use ๐ for the number zero. Learn the actual character rather than relying on how one font draws a circle or dot.
Closing Marks in the Selected Card:
The second card asks for ๏ at the opening and ๚ at the closing. It illustrates those selected positions; it does not prove that every literary edition must use one fixed pairing or closing hierarchy.

Common Mistakes
Write The Number Zero In This Money Amount.
มี ๏ บาทมี ๐ บาทChoose มี ๐ บาท for the number zero. ๏ is a different punctuation character and does not write the numerical amount in this card.
Use The Selected Opening And Closing Marks.
๏ สวัสดีครับ ๏๏ สวัสดีครับ ๚This card requests ๏ at the opening and ๚ at the closing: ๏ สวัสดีครับ ๚. The other slot repeats the opener at the closing position. It does not establish a universal closing scheme for all Thai literary text.
How It Connects
Learn This First
The Paragraph Mark (๏), known as Fong Man or Ta Kai, is a specialized punctuation mark used in classical Thai literature and manuscripts. To understand its use, a learner should be familiar with basic Thai script and the historical context of Thai verse forms where this mark serves as a structural indicator for the beginning of a section or stanza.
- Poetry Forms
Since this mark is primarily used to open sections in classical verse and manuscripts, understanding the context of Thai poetry is essential.
Level 6 - No Capital Letters And Thai Spacing
As Thai does not use capitalization to denote the start of sentences or sections, this mark serves a specific structural function in classical texts that replaces modern formatting.

- Thai Numerals
Compare ๏, the punctuation mark, with ๐, the Thai digit zero. They are separate characters even when their shapes look similar.
Foundations - Spacing In Thai Text
Compare spacing and written marks in complete texts. Absence of word spaces alone does not prove one historical origin or required use of ๏.
Foundations - Choosing The Right Register
Read the literary mark in its own context rather than assigning a fixed highest register to every occurrence.
