It Seems

Level 3

ดูเหมือน presents an impression or estimate, like it seems or it appears. Read the following content to find what the speaker thinks is the case.

How It Works

1. Read The Impression
ดูเหมือนว่าฝนจะตก presents an impression that rain is coming. The sentence does not itself state what evidence the speaker saw or heard. ดูเหมือนเขาจะไม่พอใจ presents his dissatisfaction as an impression. Here จะ need not mean a future event.

2. Compare Resemblance
ลูกชายดูเหมือนพ่อมาก describes the son as looking a lot like his father. Read the following noun phrase as the comparison in this example. เหมือน can also contribute to an impression in some constructions, so it is too strong to say every impression requires ดูเหมือน.

3. Read Negation Where It Occurs
ดูเหมือนจะไม่มีปัญหาอะไรนะ presents an impression that there are no problems. ดูเหมือนเขาจะไม่มา presents an impression that he will not come. Failing to have the impression that he will come is not the same logical statement as having the impression that he will not come. Changing the scope of negation can change the meaning. Read what is negated in the complete clause.

4. Notice The Speaker’s Perspective
สำหรับผม ดูเหมือนว่ามันจะแพงเกินไป explicitly identifies the speaker’s perspective. The sentence does not establish a universal preferred wording for native speakers. Compare ว่า, จะ, and the uncertainty expressions in their own full examples rather than assigning each one a fixed source of evidence or numeric probability.

Examples (5)

  1. ดูเหมือนว่าฝนจะตก

It looks like it's going to rain.

Word by Word: Look like that rain will fall

The speaker presents likely rain as an impression. Dark clouds are one possible context, but they are not mentioned in this sentence.

  2. ดูเหมือนเขาจะไม่พอใจ

    He seems dissatisfied.

Word by Word: look like he [modal] not satisfied

จะ appears in an impression about his dissatisfaction; it does not force a future-only interpretation of the state.

  3. ลูกชายดูเหมือนพ่อมาก

The son looks a lot like his father.

Word by Word: Son look like father very

This shows the [ดูเหมือน + Noun] structure used for physical resemblance.

  4. ดูเหมือนจะไม่มีปัญหาอะไรนะ

There do not seem to be any problems.

Word by Word: look like [modal] not have problem any [particle]

ไม่ negates the having of problems inside the content of the impression. A present or future reference depends on context.

  5. สำหรับผม ดูเหมือนว่ามันจะแพงเกินไป

It seems to me that it is too expensive.

Word by Word: for me look like that it [modal] expensive too much

สำหรับผม explicitly gives the speaker’s perspective on the price. No comparison with a universally preferred native wording is implied.

Learn This First

To understand 'ดูเหมือน' (It seems), you first need to know the base word 'เหมือน' which means 'like' or 'similar'. Since this pattern often functions as a clause-linker to describe an impression, familiarity with the linker 'ว่า' (that) is essential. Finally, understanding other markers of probability like 'คงจะ' provides the necessary context for making guesses or stating impressions in Thai.
