เหมือน

Same as

Level 2

Use เหมือน (muean) for a comparison such as same as or like. In เขาหน้าเหมือนแม่มาก, the resemblance is stated without an extra word for is.

How It Works

1. A Comparison (A เหมือน B)
Place เหมือน between the things being compared. In เขาหน้าเหมือนพ่อ, หน้า identifies the aspect of resemblance: the person's face. The sentence does not require เป็น before เหมือน. Treat เขาเป็นเหมือนพี่ชาย as a separate complete construction whose intended relationship depends on context; this lesson does not ban เป็นเหมือน in every comparison.

2. Comparing With กับ
In เหมือนกับ, กับ introduces what something is compared with. The supplied รสชาติเหมือนกับไก่ compares a taste with chicken. เหมือนกับเด็ก is another comparison, meaning “like a child”. This does not establish a quantified frequency rule or require กับ in every comparison.

3. Alike and Also: เหมือนกัน
เหมือนกัน can describe shared similarity, as in เราคิดเหมือนกัน, or have an additive too/also use. It need not be the last material in every sentence. Read ก็ in its complete clause rather than adding it by an obligatory-particle rule. For a response such as ก็ร้อนเหมือนกัน, consult the linked entry and the conversation; do not treat every sentence-level use as an object comparison.

4. Negative Comparisons
ไม่ can negate the comparison. ไม่เหมือน (A ไม่เหมือน B) means not like; ไม่เหมือนกัน can describe things as not alike. ต่างกัน expresses a difference. The aspect of comparison still comes from context.

5. Read the Whole Expression
เหมือนเดิม relates something to how it was before. ดูเหมือน introduces an appearance or impression. In เหมือนว่า, ว่า introduces the following clause. อย่างกับ can be used for a like/as-if comparison. These expressions have their own complete constructions. Their choice depends on the sentence and situation; they are not interchangeable in every sentence.

6. Comparing With คล้าย
คล้าย is another way to describe resemblance. Do not reduce the choice to an absolute rule that เหมือน always means identical and คล้าย always means partly similar. Consider what resemblance the sentence actually describes.

7. เหมือนกัน and เดียวกัน
With เหมือนกัน, เราใส่เสื้อเหมือนกัน compares the shirts as alike. เดียวกัน concerns a shared same referent or category in its context; it is not limited to two people physically sharing one shirt. For two separate shirts that look alike, เหมือนกัน makes the intended resemblance explicit. เราใส่เสื้อตัวเดียวกัน can have a valid contextual reading and is not the incorrect slot in the revised exercise. The spelling exercise now contrasts deliberately misspelled เหมืนกัน with standard เหมือนกัน.

8. Comparison and Measurable Equality
เหมือนกัน can express likeness, while เท่ากัน expresses equality, as in ราคาเท่ากัน. Specify whether the intended comparison concerns appearance, kind, amount, or another quality. Do not infer equality in every respect from เหมือน alone.

Examples (4)

  1. เขาหน้าเหมือนแม่มาก

His face is just like his mother's.

Word by Word: he face like mother very

หน้า identifies the face as the aspect of resemblance. The comparison is expressed without adding เป็น in this sentence. The English rendering selects a male referent and identifies whose mother is meant from context; เขา does not itself specify male gender, and แม่ has no possessive pronoun here.

  2. ทำเหมือนที่ผมบอกนะ

Do it like I told you.

Word by Word: do like what I tell [particle]

เหมือน relates the requested action to ที่ผมบอก: what I told you. The English past-time rendering is contextual; the Thai verb itself has no English-style past inflection.

  3. เราคิดเหมือนกัน

    We think the same.

Word by Word: we think alike

เหมือนกัน says that our thinking is alike in the intended comparison. In other contexts the expression can mean too or also.

  4. รสชาติเหมือนกับไก่

    It tastes just like chicken.

Word by Word: taste like with chicken

The taste is compared with chicken through เหมือนกับ. The sentence does not claim the thing being tasted is itself chicken.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving อ out of the standard spelling เหมือนกัน.

    เราใส่เสื้อเหมืนกัน
    เราใส่เสื้อเหมือนกัน

The standard written expression is เหมือนกัน. The deliberately incorrect slot writes เหมืนกัน, leaving อ out of เหมือน. Restore that letter to obtain เราใส่เสื้อเหมือนกัน. This exercise checks spelling; it does not treat the different, contextually valid sentence เราใส่เสื้อตัวเดียวกัน as intrinsically wrong.

  • Leaving the tone mark out of the example-introducing word เช่น.

    ฉันชอบผลไม้เชนมะม่วง
    ฉันชอบผลไม้เช่นมะม่วง

In this sentence, use the standard written word เช่น to introduce mangoes as an example of fruit. The deliberately incorrect slot writes เชน without the tone mark ่. Restore the mark to obtain ฉันชอบผลไม้เช่นมะม่วง. This spelling exercise does not declare the different comparison ฉันชอบผลไม้เหมือนมะม่วง ungrammatical.
