ถ้า ... ก็คง
If, Then Probably
Read the if-condition after ถ้า and the likely result containing คง. The surrounding account supplies the time and whether the situation is imagined.
How It Works
Condition And Likely Result
ถ้า introduces the condition and คง presents the result as likely. This can be an open condition: the dictionary example ถ้าเขามา กระผมก็คงไม่พูด says that if he comes, the speaker probably will not speak.
Read The Contextual Translations
The examples here also consider imagined situations. The English for ถ้ารู้ก่อน ก็คงไม่มา chooses If I had known beforehand, I would not have come. The Thai does not name the subject; the surrounding account supplies that person and the time.
Notice The Written Result
ถ้าเขาขยันกว่านี้ เขาคงสอบผ่านไปแล้ว contains คง without ก็. Its translation presents an already-achieved result in the imagined situation. The other example imagines being the listener and gives a likely action.
Keep Condition And Fact Separate
A condition states a premise for the result. The connector and คง alone do not report whether the premise actually happened. Read the whole account before selecting an open or past what-if translation.
Examples (4)
- ถ้ารู้ก่อน ก็คงไม่มา
If I had known beforehand, I wouldn't have come.
Word by Word: If know before, then likely not come
The English gives a past what-if reading. รู้ก่อน means know beforehand; the Thai does not name the subject. The situation supplies the missing person and time.
- ถ้าเขาขยันกว่านี้ เขาคงสอบผ่านไปแล้ว
If he had been more diligent, he would have passed the exam already.
Word by Word: If he diligent more this, he likely exam pass already
The translation presents passing as the imagined result, already achieved. The written result is เขาคงสอบผ่านไปแล้ว and contains no ก็.
- ถ้าฉันเป็นคุณ ฉันก็คงทำแบบนั้นเหมือนกัน
If I were you, I would probably do the same thing.
Word by Word: If I be you, I then likely do way that same
The speaker imagines being the listener and gives the likely action in that situation. The English chooses would do.
- ถ้าฝนไม่ตก เราก็คงได้ไปเที่ยวกันแล้ว
If it hadn't rained, we would have gone on our trip already.
Word by Word: If rain not fall, we then likely get go travel together already
This English translation selects a past what-if reading of the rain and trip. It does not establish that the same Thai wording fixes a past reading in every situation.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand 'ถ้า ... ก็คง' (If it had been...), you first need to be comfortable with the basic 'if... then' structure in Thai. You also need to understand how 'คง' is used to express probability and how markers like 'แล้ว' indicate that the scenario being discussed is a completed event in the past that didn't actually happen.
- ถ้า ... ก็If Then
This pattern provides the basic 'if... then' structure that 'ถ้า ... ก็คง' builds upon to express hypothetical outcomes.
Level 2 - คงจะProbably
The word 'คง' (from 'คงจะ') is used here to indicate the probability or likelihood of the imagined result.
Level 3 - แล้วAlready Done
Understanding how 'แล้ว' marks completed actions is essential for forming the past-tense hypothetical scenarios often used with this pattern.

Related Patterns
- หากConditions with หาก
หาก also introduces a condition; reality and time depend on the complete context.
Level 4 - Verb + ไปแล้วAlready Happened with ไปแล้ว
Compare an already-completed result described with ไปแล้ว; completion does not itself mean irreversible or counterfactual.
Level 4 - สมมติว่าSuppose That
Means 'suppose that' or 'hypothetically,' often used to set up the premise for a 'ถ้า ... ก็คง' sentence.
