ชิ้น
Classifier for Pieces
The examples use ชิ้น for cake and bread pieces, pizza slices, tasks, and glass fragments. The intended unit helps determine the classifier.
How It Works
1. Identify the Unit
ชิ้น can identify a piece or fragment and is also used to count pieces of work. In the displayed examples, read the whole noun phrase: a piece of cake, two bread pieces, several tasks, three pizza slices, or three glass fragments. The word alone does not tell you whether every object has been cut from a larger whole.
2. Compare Classifiers in Context
อัน can count an individual object. A whole individual cake and a piece of cake need not be the same referent. แผ่น concerns thin, flat objects; a flat cookie can be described with that shape in mind. The exercises below request ชิ้น, without declaring these alternatives ungrammatical in every context.
Other linked entries teach their own units: ลูก, กล่อง, ห่อ, and คู่. Compare their complete examples before choosing a unit; this list does not assign a compulsory classifier to every food, gift, or piece of jewelry.
3. Pieces, Work, and Fragments
เขามีงานต้องทำอีกหลายชิ้น says that he still has many more tasks to do. เศษแก้ว 3 ชิ้น counts three glass fragments. The linked ๆ entry explains its own repetition patterns. Do not infer a fixed classifier for every bone, clothing item, product, furniture item, or bag from the English word piece.
Compare the separate entries for ตัว, ตัว, ใบ, and หลัง in their own constructions. Their presence here does not certify every category assignment in the older explanation.
4. Read the Displayed Patterns
Counting: เค้กสองชิ้น identifies two pieces of cake. Pointing: เค้กชิ้นนี้ identifies this piece of cake. A question can use เค้ก + กี่ + ชิ้น to ask how many pieces. These are the constructions taught here; classifiers are not obligatory in every possible Thai utterance.
5. Keep the Exercise Request Separate
The first exercise requests two pieces, not a universal rule that ชิ้นสอง always means second piece. The next exercises request ชิ้น for the stated unit; อัน or แผ่น can be appropriate when a different whole object or shape is intended. These comparisons make no claim about how often speakers choose one form, or about a form being unrefined.
Examples (5)
- เค้กชิ้นนี้ราคาเท่าไหร่?
How much is this piece of cake?
Word by Word: Cake piece this price how much?
Here, ชิ้น is used with the demonstrative นี้ (this) to specify a particular slice.
- ขอขนมปังสองชิ้นครับ
May I have two pieces of bread, please?
Word by Word: Request bread two piece [polite]
In this displayed counting phrase, สอง precedes ชิ้น.
- เขามีงานต้องทำอีกหลายชิ้น
He still has many more tasks to do.
Word by Word: He have work must do still many piece
งาน is work, and อีกหลายชิ้น identifies many more tasks still to do. This is not a comparison with another person’s workload.
- ฉันกินพิซซ่าไปสามชิ้น
I ate three slices of pizza.
Word by Word: I eat pizza [completed in this sentence] three piece
The displayed sentence describes eating three pizza slices. ไป contributes to the completed reading in this context; it is not a universal past-tense marker.
- ระวังเศษแก้ว 3 ชิ้นบนพื้นนะ
Be careful of the 3 pieces of broken glass on the floor.
Word by Word: Careful fragment glass 3 piece on floor [softener]
ชิ้น is used to count fragments and debris, such as pieces of broken glass.
Common Mistakes
Not reproducing the requested pattern for two pieces of cake.
เค้กชิ้นสอง (khék chín sǎwng)เค้กสองชิ้น (khék sǎwng chín)The exercise requests เค้กสองชิ้น, with สอง before ชิ้น. เค้กชิ้นสอง does not reproduce that pattern. This does not claim that ชิ้นสอง always means second piece or that every noun phrase must use this counting order.
Choosing อัน when the exercise requests a piece of cake with ชิ้น.
เค้กหนึ่งอัน (khék nùeng an)เค้กหนึ่งชิ้น (khék nùeng chín)The task requests เค้กหนึ่งชิ้น for one piece of cake. เค้กหนึ่งอัน can refer to a whole individual cake in an appropriate context, so it is not universally ungrammatical. The difference here is the requested unit, not a judgment that อัน sounds unrefined.
Not reproducing the requested cookie phrase with ชิ้น.
คุกกี้สองแผ่น (khúk-kîi sǎwng phàen)คุกกี้สองชิ้น (khúk-kîi sǎwng chín)The exercise requests คุกกี้สองชิ้น. คุกกี้สองแผ่น does not reproduce that requested phrase, but แผ่น can be appropriate when the cookies are treated as thin, flat objects. Neither wording alone proves that a cookie is whole or divided, and no usage-frequency rank is claimed.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To use the classifier 'ชิ้น' (chín), you first need to understand the general concept of classifiers in Thai and the specific word order used when counting nouns (Noun + Number + Classifier). It is also helpful to understand that Thai does not use plural markers like 's' in English, relying on classifiers instead.
