ลูก
Counting with ลูก
The displayed examples use ลูก to count oranges, mountains, and a watermelon, or to identify a particular storm. A noun's classifier is not determined by a universal shape rule.
How It Works
1. Read the Whole Phrase
ส้มสองลูก counts two oranges. ซื้อแตงโมหนึ่งลูก requests one watermelon. The number precedes ลูก in these displayed counting phrases. These examples do not establish that every round object or every fruit must use ลูก.
2. Compare the Other Examples
มีภูเขาสามลูกอยู่หลังบ้าน describes three mountains behind the house. พายุลูกนี้แรงมาก identifies this particular storm: พายุ names a storm, and นี้ means this. These lexical uses are not proof that every mountain or storm has a spherical shape, or that shape alone determines the classifier.
3. Keep the Intended Unit Clear
กล้วยหนึ่งลูก can count one individual banana. กล้วยหนึ่งหวี refers to one comb of bananas. The exercise requests the comb quantity, so the individual-banana phrase does not fulfill that request. It is not being rejected as universally ungrammatical.
4. Distinguish a Child From a Classifier
In มีลูกสามคน, ลูก is a noun meaning child and คน counts people. The exercise requests this ordinary people-counting construction. It does not establish how every listener would interpret the alternative.
5. Compare Separate Entries
The linked ใบ and อัน entries teach their own constructions. Compare their complete examples before choosing a classifier for another noun. This lesson does not endorse every category, register, frequency, ammunition, or household-item claim in the older explanation.
Examples (4)
- ส้มสองลูก
Two oranges
Word by Word: orange + two + [classifier]
The phrase uses ลูก to count two oranges.
- มีภูเขาสามลูกอยู่หลังบ้าน
There are three mountains behind the house.
Word by Word: have + mountain + three + [classifier] + be at + back + house
The displayed phrase uses ลูก to count mountains. It does not state that their physical shape causes this lexical choice.
- พายุลูกนี้แรงมาก
This storm is very strong.
Word by Word: storm + [classifier] + this + strong + very
ลูกนี้ identifies the particular storm referred to as this storm.
- ซื้อแตงโมหนึ่งลูก
Buy one watermelon.
Word by Word: buy + watermelon + one + [classifier]
The request uses ลูก to count one watermelon.
Common Mistakes
Not reproducing the requested construction for counting children.
มีลูกสามลูกมีลูกสามคนThe task requests มีลูกสามคน. Here ลูก means children and คน counts people. มีลูกสามลูก does not reproduce that requested people-counting phrase. This comparison does not claim a fixed insulting interpretation for every context.
Using 'lûuk' when the intended quantity is a comb or bunch of fruit rather than one individual fruit.
กล้วยหนึ่งลูกกล้วยหนึ่งหวีThe example contrast assumes you mean a comb or bunch, not one individual banana. A single banana can be a 'lûuk'; a banana comb uses 'wǐi'. Grapes grouped in a bunch use 'chôr'. The individual-fruit example does not express the intended comb quantity.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To use the classifier 'ลูก' (lûuk), you first need to understand the general concept of classifiers in Thai and the specific word order used when counting nouns (Noun + Number + Classifier). Familiarity with Thai numerals is also necessary to form complete counting expressions.
