Classifier for Servings and Seats

Level 2

ที่ (thîi) can count food portions or sets and seats or places. The number comes before ที่ in the displayed counts.

How It Works

1. Count Portions
ขอผัดไทยสองที่ครับ requests two portions of Pad Thai. ข้าวเปล่าห้าที่ค่ะ requests five portions of rice. These phrases use the noun–number–classifier pattern.

2. Count Seats Or Places
In จองโต๊ะสำหรับห้าที่ครับ, ห้าที่ gives five places for a table reservation. ที่ counts the places in this sentence. In ข้าวเปล่าหนึ่งที่กินได้สองคน, ที่ counts one portion and คน counts two people. The speaker is describing that portion, not setting a universal serving size.

3. Read The Item And The Unit Together
The displayed coffee order uses สองที่ for two orders or servings. Learn that complete service-context example; it does not mean that every drink uses ที่. Other classifiers need their own referents and constructions. For example, จาน can count food on plates as well as referring to the container, so a strict “physical container versus portion” rule would be misleading.

4. Distinguish Other Uses Of ที่
ที่ can also refer to a place, introduce a relative clause, mark location, or introduce an ordinal. In ที่สอง, it comes before the number to mean “second.” That is different from สองที่ counting two portions. Read its position and the whole phrase.

Examples (5)

  1. ขอผัดไทยสองที่ครับ

May I have two orders of Pad Thai, please?

Word by Word: Request + Pad Thai + two + [serving classifier] + [polite particle]

Here, ที่ is used to count the number of portions or 'orders' of Pad Thai.

  2. ข้าวเปล่าห้าที่ค่ะ

Five servings of plain rice, please.

Word by Word: Rice + plain + five + [serving classifier] + [polite particle]

ห้าที่ counts five portions of rice. The sentence does not specify their containers.

  3. ข้าวเปล่าหนึ่งที่กินได้สองคน

One serving of plain rice is enough for two people.

Word by Word: Rice + plain + one + [serving classifier] + eat + can + two + [people classifier]

The speaker says this one portion serves two people. ที่ counts the portion and คน counts the people; the sentence is not a fixed claim about how much rice everyone needs.

  4. จองโต๊ะสำหรับห้าที่ครับ

I'd like to reserve a table for five places.

Word by Word: Reserve + table + for + five + [place classifier] + [polite particle]

In this context, ที่ refers to the number of seats or 'places' at the table, not the people themselves.

  5. กาแฟสองที่ค่ะ

    Two orders of coffee, please.

Word by Word: Coffee + two + [serving classifier] + [polite particle]

The speaker orders two servings or orders of coffee in this example. The sentence does not establish a classifier rule for every drink.

Common Mistakes

  • When ordering two portions of Pad Thai, putting ที่ before สอง.

    ขอผัดไทยที่สองครับ
    ขอผัดไทยสองที่ครับ

This task asks for two portions: ขอผัดไทยสองที่ครับ. สอง comes before the serving classifier ที่. ขอผัดไทยที่สองครับ places ที่ before สอง, giving an ordinal expression rather than the requested count of two portions.

  • When counting five friends as people, using ที่ instead of คน.

    มีเพื่อนห้าที่
    มีเพื่อนห้าคน

The requested sentence counts friends as people: มีเพื่อนห้าคน. ที่ can count portions or places in a service context, but มีเพื่อนห้าที่ does not give the requested people count.

Learn This First

To use 'ที่' as a classifier for servings and seats, you first need to understand the basic concept of Thai classifiers and the specific word order used when counting nouns (Noun + Number + Classifier). Knowledge of Thai numerals is also required to express the quantity.
