คู่
Classifier for Pairs
คู่ counts pairs in รองเท้าสองคู่ and เขามีถุงเท้าหลายคู่. In ตะเกียบคู่นี้ของใคร?, it identifies a particular pair of chopsticks; in คู่รักคู่นี้น่ารักมาก, the first คู่ belongs to คู่รัก and the second counts the couple.
How It Works
1. Counting the Displayed Pairs
รองเท้าสองคู่ places two before คู่; เขามีถุงเท้าหลายคู่ uses หลาย to present many pairs of socks. Compare the linked counting construction in its own complete examples. These displayed sequences do not prescribe every possible Thai noun phrase.
2. Identifying a Pair
ตะเกียบคู่นี้ของใคร? asks whose pair of chopsticks this is. Read ของใคร as whose, rather than physical movement from somebody. In คู่รักคู่นี้น่ารักมาก, คู่รัก names a couple and the following คู่ counts that couple; มาก supplies very to the speaker’s description.
3. The Requested Units
The trousers task requests กางเกงหนึ่งตัว and the scissors task requests กรรไกรหนึ่งเล่ม. The single-shoe task requests รองเท้าหนึ่งข้าง rather than a whole pair. Learn these complete phrases instead of deriving an all-object classifier rule from whether an object has joined parts or can function alone. Alternative counting contexts need their own complete interpretation.
4. Primary Examples
NIU gives ฉันต้องการรองเท้าคู่หนึ่ง, a pair of shoes, and ฝาแฝดคู่นี้เหมือนกันทุกอย่าง, a pair of twins. Its Unit 9 classifier discussion contrasts shoe and sock pairs with trousers counted by ตัว. These precise examples support the displayed pair and clothing contrast; they do not establish frequency, obligatory matching, or a universal classifier for every object or person.
Examples (4)
- รองเท้าสองคู่
Two pairs of shoes
Word by Word: shoes + two + pair
In รองเท้าสองคู่, สอง appears between รองเท้า and คู่.
- ตะเกียบคู่นี้ของใคร?
Whose pair of chopsticks is this?
Word by Word: chopsticks | pair | this | belonging to whom?
คู่ precedes นี้ in this particular-pair question; ของใคร asks whose it is.
- เขามีถุงเท้าหลายคู่
He has many pairs of socks.
Word by Word: he + have + socks + many + pair
หลาย occurs before คู่ in the displayed many-pairs statement. The sentence does not fix a numerical threshold for many.
- คู่รักคู่นี้น่ารักมาก
This couple is very cute.
Word by Word: คู่รัก [couple] | คู่ [pair classifier] | this | cute | very
คู่รัก names the couple, and the following คู่ is its classifier. มาก supplies very; being cute is the speaker’s description.
Common Mistakes
Not using the requested trousers-counting construction.
กางเกงหนึ่งคู่กางเกงหนึ่งตัวThis exercise requests กางเกงหนึ่งตัว with ตัว. กางเกงหนึ่งคู่ does not reproduce that requested phrase. The English counting unit pair does not require the Thai classifier คู่; other contextual readings are not ruled out by this task.
Not using the requested scissors-counting construction.
กรรไกรหนึ่งคู่กรรไกรหนึ่งเล่มThe task requests กรรไกรหนึ่งเล่ม with เล่ม. กรรไกรหนึ่งคู่ does not reproduce that requested classifier. Compare อัน in its own complete counting examples; this task does not derive a universal joined-parts rule or a rule for glasses.
Counting a pair instead of the requested single shoe.
รองเท้าหนึ่งคู่รองเท้าหนึ่งข้างThe exercise explicitly asks for one shoe and requests รองเท้าหนึ่งข้าง. รองเท้าหนึ่งคู่ counts a pair instead. The contrast is the requested unit; it does not ban คู่ when a pair is intended.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To use the classifier 'คู่' (khûu), you first need to understand how Thai uses classifiers to count nouns. You should be familiar with the standard word order for counting (Noun + Number + Classifier) and be able to recognize Thai numbers.
