ใบ

Classifier for Sheets and Containers

Level 1

ใบ (bai) is a Thai classifier used with particular nouns. The examples count bags, tickets, a plate, pillows, and eggs. Flat items and containers are useful examples, but they are not a rule covering every noun with those shapes.

How It Works

ใบ is used with a range of particular nouns. Learn the noun and classifier together rather than treating flatness or hollowness as a complete rule.

1. Documents and Slips:
The ticket example uses ใบ. Other documents and slips have noun-specific choices; not every flat object takes this classifier. For paper, แผ่น counts individual sheets, while other units can count rolls, bundles, or packages.

2. Containers and Everyday Items:
The examples use ใบ with bags, a plate, and pillows. It can also be used with nouns for items such as drinking glasses, cups, and hats. This is not a claim that every container, utensil, or hollow object takes ใบ, or that it is the only classifier for every listed noun. Compare the noun-specific choices in the linked lessons on คัน and หลัง rather than deriving a classifier from shape alone.

3. Eggs and Other Rounded Items:
In ซื้อไข่ห้าใบ, ใบ counts eggs. ฟอง and ลูก are also listed classifiers for eggs. These alternatives do not establish a textbook-versus-spoken distinction, and they do not make ใบ an automatic classifier for all fruit or rounded objects.

4. A Container or a Serving:
Distinguish counting a physical drinking glass from counting a serving of water. แก้วสองใบ counts two glass vessels; the vessels do not have to be empty. น้ำสองแก้ว counts two glassfuls of water, using แก้ว as the unit. The intended noun and quantity determine the construction.

Examples (5)

  1. กระเป๋าสองใบ

    Two bags

Word by Word: bag two [classifier]

This shows the standard counting pattern: Noun (กระเป๋า) + Number (สอง) + Classifier (ใบ).

  2. ขอตั๋วสามใบครับ

May I have three tickets, please?

Word by Word: request ticket three [classifier] [polite particle]

ใบ counts tickets in this request. Learn this classifier with the noun for tickets; a flat or functional shape alone does not determine the classifier for every other item. ครับ supplies a polite particle, while the English request is a selected natural rendering of the full utterance.

  3. จานใบนี้สะอาดไหม

    Is this plate clean?

Word by Word: plate [classifier] this clean [question particle]

The noun phrase จานใบนี้ uses Noun + Classifier + Demonstrative to identify this plate. The remainder asks whether it is clean. This example teaches the displayed construction, not a requirement that every reference to an object must contain all three parts.

  4. เขามีหมอนหลายใบ

    He has many pillows.

Word by Word: he have pillow many [classifier]

ใบ counts pillows in this sentence. หลาย marks an indefinite quantity, rendered as 'many'. The English selects 'he' for เขา; context determines the referent. Learn the classifier with the noun for pillows rather than extending it to most hollow objects.

  5. ซื้อไข่ห้าใบ

    Buy five eggs.

Word by Word: buy egg five [classifier]

ใบ counts the five eggs in this example. The Royal Society classifier list also gives ฟอง and ลูก for eggs. This lesson does not rank their spoken frequency or assign one exclusively to textbooks; the example does not create a rule for every round object.

Common Mistakes

  • Count Two Drinking Glasses.

    น้ำสองแก้ว
    แก้วสองใบ

แก้วสองใบ counts two drinking glasses. น้ำสองแก้ว counts two glassfuls of water, so it changes what is being counted. Both expressions can be grammatical; choose the phrase that counts the glasses for this task. The glasses do not have to be empty.

  • Choosing a unit when the intended meaning is 'two glasses of water'.

    น้ำสองใบ
    น้ำสองแก้ว

For two glassfuls of water, use น้ำสองแก้ว: แก้ว names the serving unit. น้ำสองใบ does not express that intended water quantity. By contrast, แก้วสองใบ counts the physical glass vessels themselves; they need not be empty. Choose the unit for what the full expression is counting.

  • Building the full counting phrase for 'two bags'.

    สองใบกระเป๋า
    กระเป๋าสองใบ

For the full counting phrase shown here, use กระเป๋าสองใบ: noun, then number, then classifier. สองใบกระเป๋า does not give that practice pattern. This exercise does not claim that every Thai sentence must begin with a noun or that context can never allow a noun to be omitted.
