กลับ
Against the Stated Expectation
In these examples, กลับ presents the following situation against an expectation. NIU lists contrary-to-expectation separately from return and turn-back senses. Read the full predicate and context rather than inferring a guaranteed emotion or one universal meaning.
How It Works
1. The Displayed Contrasts
Read กลับ with ด่าเอา, มาถึงก่อนใคร, ลืมไว้ที่บ้าน, and ได้ผลดีมาก in the complete examples. NIU lists a contrary-to-expectation sense alongside separate return and turning senses. These examples do not establish a single function for every กลับ, a register-frequency rule, or an automatic emotional effect.
2. Subject and Result Context
The late-arrival assumption has no expressed thinker, so [I] in its translation is inferred. The niceness example also relies on context for who was addressed or scolded. The medicine sentence is a speaker’s claim contrasting its price and stated result; it is not evidence that cheap medicines usually work poorly or that this medicine is effective.
3. The Requested Substitution Sentence
The first exercise requests ผมจะไปแทนคุณ, meaning I will go in your place. Read linked แทน in that substitution phrase. ผมจะไปกลับคุณ does not reproduce the requested in-your-place meaning. The exercise does not establish every possible meaning or position of กลับ in other constructions.
4. The Requested Negative Sequence
The second task requests เขากลับไม่มา, with กลับ before ไม่มา for the intended counter-expectation statement. เขาไม่มากลับ does not reproduce this requested sequence. Read the complete predicate rather than applying the English placement of instead to every Thai construction.
Examples (4)
- เราพูดด้วยดีๆ เขากลับด่าเอา
We spoke nicely [to him], but he scolded [us] instead.
Word by Word: we | speak nicely | he | กลับ [contrary to expectation] | scolds [object inferred]
The sentence presents the scolding response against the nicely spoken first clause. The addressee and scolded person in the translation are inferred; a polite reciprocal response is a possible expectation in context, not guaranteed by the words alone.
- นึกว่าจะมาสาย เขากลับมาถึงก่อนใคร
[I] thought he'd be late, but he arrived before everyone else.
Word by Word: think | will come late | he | กลับ [contrary to expectation] | arrives before anyone else
The first clause states a late-arrival assumption, while the second presents arrival before everyone else. [I] is an inferred thinker; the text does not independently prove a particular emotion.
- ของสำคัญขนาดนี้ เขากลับลืมไว้ที่บ้าน
It is something this important, yet he left it forgotten at home.
Word by Word: thing | this important | he | กลับ [contrary to expectation] | leaves it forgotten at home
ลืมไว้ที่บ้าน refers to leaving the object forgotten at home. The sentence contrasts its stated importance with forgetting it; it does not prove that forgetting an important object is universally ironic.
- ยาตัวนี้ราคาถูกแต่กลับได้ผลดีมาก
This medicine is cheap but works very well, according to the speaker.
Word by Word: this medicine | price cheap | but | กลับ [contrary to expectation] | works very well
Read the price and effect as the speaker’s contrasting claims in this grammar example. This is not medical advice or evidence of efficacy, and it does not establish a general relationship between low price and poor effectiveness.
Common Mistakes
Not reproducing the requested going-in-your-place sentence.
ผมจะไปกลับคุณผมจะไปแทนคุณThis exercise requests ผมจะไปแทนคุณ, with แทน expressing substitution. ผมจะไปกลับคุณ does not reproduce that requested meaning. The task distinguishes this in-your-place phrase from the displayed counter-expectation use.
Not reproducing the requested กลับไม่มา sequence.
เขาไม่มากลับเขากลับไม่มาThe requested counter-expectation sentence is เขากลับไม่มา, with กลับ before ไม่มา. เขาไม่มากลับ does not reproduce this sequence. The exercise does not establish one position for every lexical sense or construction containing กลับ.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand 'กลับ' as a marker of contrary expectation, you first need to be comfortable with basic Thai sentence structure and the placement of modifiers before verbs. Knowing how to negate a verb with 'ไม่' is also crucial, as 'กลับ' is very often paired with it to show that an expected action failed to occur.
- ไม่Not
The pattern 'กลับ' is frequently used with negation ('กลับไม่...') to express that something expected did not happen, making the basic negative marker a common component.
Level 1 - แต่But
The concept of 'contrary to expectation' often functions as a contrastive idea similar to 'but', which helps in understanding the logical flow of sentences using 'กลับ'.
