เพียง
Reading เพียง in Complete Phrases
In the displayed examples, เพียง helps express only or just, while its compounds also express extent or an exception. Read each complete construction.
How It Works
1. Read The Complete Limitation
เขามีเงินเหลือเพียงสิบบาท says that he has only ten baht left. เราเป็นเพียงเพื่อนกันเท่านั้น says that we are only friends, using the displayed เพียง...เท่านั้น frame. These sentences do not establish a formal-versus-casual boundary, a frequency ranking, or a compulsory position for every use.
2. Read Not Only... But Also
เขาไม่เพียงแต่เก่ง แต่ยังขยันอีกด้วย adds being hardworking to being skilled or capable. Read ไม่เพียงแต่...แต่ยัง...อีกด้วย as the complete not-only...but-also construction in this example.
3. Read The Stated Result
เพียงแค่คิดก็มีความสุขแล้ว describes happiness from just thinking. The English example supplies a first-person experiencer. The Thai sentence itself does not name that person. This example does not prove that เพียงแค่ always softens a request, conveys pleading, or can be reversed without any change of nuance.
4. Read Extent In Context
ทำไมปัญหาถึงบานปลายเพียงนี้ asks why the problem has escalated to this extent. Here extent concerns degree, not surface area. The selected NIU lexical entries also distinguish extent readings and compounds such as เพียงใด and เพียงพอ. Do not infer a single word-for-word reading of every compound from the meaning only.
5. Read The Exception
บ้านหลังนี้สวยมาก เพียงแต่ว่าราคาแพงไปหน่อย praises this house and then adds that its price is a little too high. In this sentence, เพียงแต่ว่า introduces the stated drawback. The example does not restrict every such clause to a minor condition or a positive preceding statement.
6. Copy The Requested Wording
The first comparison asks for กินแค่นิดเดียว with แค่. กินเพียงนิดเดียว uses a different limiter and does not copy that requested wording; this exercise does not label it universally ungrammatical or socially unsuitable. The second comparison asks for เขามีเพียงสิบบาท. เขามีสิบบาทเพียง does not reproduce that phrase. Read the limitation with its full phrase without deriving an always-before rule from this task.
Examples (6)
- เขามีเงินเหลือเพียงสิบบาท
He has only ten baht left.
Word by Word: he + have + money + remain + only + ten + baht
เพียงสิบบาท limits the remaining money to ten baht in this sentence; it does not certify a register or report-writing frequency.
- เราเป็นเพียงเพื่อนกันเท่านั้น
We are only friends.
Word by Word: we + be + only + friends + each other + only
The displayed เพียง...เท่านั้น frame limits the relationship to friendship. เป็น is rendered as are, not as become.
- เขาไม่เพียงแต่เก่ง แต่ยังขยันอีกด้วย
He is not only smart, but also hardworking.
Word by Word: he + not + only + skilled + but + also + hardworking + as well
ไม่เพียงแต่...แต่ยัง...อีกด้วย adds the second quality to the first in this complete example.
- เพียงแค่คิดก็มีความสุขแล้ว
Just thinking about it makes me happy.
Word by Word: only + just + think + then + have + happiness + already
เพียงแค่คิดก็มีความสุขแล้ว links just thinking with happiness. The English reading supplies me; the Thai wording does not name an experiencer.
- ทำไมปัญหาถึงบานปลายเพียงนี้
Why did the problem escalate to this extent?
Word by Word: why + problem + then + escalate + to this extent
เพียงนี้ expresses the degree of escalation here, not an area measurement.
- บ้านหลังนี้สวยมาก เพียงแต่ว่าราคาแพงไปหน่อย
This house is very beautiful, except that the price is a bit too high.
Word by Word: house + classifier + this + beautiful + very + except that + price + expensive + too + a little
เพียงแต่ว่า introduces the price drawback after the description of this house.
Common Mistakes
Not copying the requested phrase with แค่.
กินเพียงนิดเดียวกินแค่นิดเดียวThe task asks for กินแค่นิดเดียว. กินเพียงนิดเดียว changes the limiter and does not copy the requested phrase. This contrast does not reject เพียง in all casual conversation or certify how either phrase sounds in every social setting.
Not copying the requested money-limiting phrase.
เขามีสิบบาทเพียงเขามีเพียงสิบบาทCopy เขามีเพียงสิบบาท for the requested only-ten-baht wording. เขามีสิบบาทเพียง does not reproduce that phrase. This comparison does not establish obligatory placement for every use of เพียง, every compound, or every conversational fragment.
How It Connects
