มี

To Have and There Is

Level 1

The examples use มี to describe having two older sisters or time, being happy, and the existence of a restaurant or water. Read its meaning with the complete clause.

How It Works

1. Having In Context
ผมมีพี่สาวสองคน says that the speaker has two older sisters; this describes a family relationship, not ownership of people. วันนี้คุณมีเวลาไหม asks whether you have time today. Compare the linked word-order entry with the complete displayed having sentences, without imposing one order on every Thai utterance.

2. Existence And Location
มีร้านอาหารใกล้ๆ นี้ไหม asks whether there is a restaurant near here. ในตู้เย็นมีน้ำเปล่า states that there is plain water in the refrigerator. The location comes first in the latter example; the restaurant question starts with มี. These examples do not require a translated English it or there as a separate subject, and they do not forbid every contextual use of มันมี.

3. Feelings
เขามีความสุขมาก describes being very happy. Read มีความสุข as the complete displayed expression, rather than treating happiness as a physical possession or assigning the pattern a usage-frequency rank.

4. Compare Negation
The linked ไม่มี entry teaches negative having and existence clauses. Read its complete contexts before supplying an unstated person, place, or time.

5. The Requested Exercises
The first task requests มีหมาในสวน to introduce a dog in the garden. มันมีหมาในสวน may have a contextual or colloquial reading, but it does not reproduce that requested wording. The second task requests แมวอยู่ในห้อง to locate the cat. แมวมีในห้อง may need a different topical or availability context; it is not a universal error merely because the noun comes first. These comparisons concern the requested meanings, not a compulsory location-first rule for every มี clause.

Examples (5)

  1. ผมมีพี่สาวสองคน

    I have two older sisters.

Word by Word: I have older-sister two [classifier]

The sentence states that the speaker has two older sisters, describing a family relationship rather than ownership of people.

  2. มีร้านอาหารใกล้ๆ นี้ไหม

Is there a restaurant near here?

Word by Word: Have shop food near-near this [question]?

The complete sentence asks whether a restaurant exists nearby; the particle ไหม marks the displayed question.

  3. เขามีความสุขมาก

    He is very happy.

Word by Word: He have happiness very

In เขามีความสุขมาก, มีความสุข describes being happy, and มาก contributes very. No frequency claim is made.

  4. ในตู้เย็นมีน้ำเปล่า

There is plain water in the refrigerator.

Word by Word: In cabinet-cool have water plain

This sentence puts the refrigerator location before มี and states that plain water is there. It does not establish that every existential clause must put the location first.

  5. วันนี้คุณมีเวลาไหม

    Do you have time today?

Word by Word: Today you have time [question]?

Uses 'มี' for the abstract concept of 'having time'.

Common Mistakes

  • Adding มัน when the task requests มีหมาในสวน.

    มันมีหมาในสวน
    มีหมาในสวน

Copy มีหมาในสวน for the requested introduction of a dog in the garden. มันมีหมาในสวน can have a contextual or colloquial reading, but does not reproduce this requested phrase. This task does not ban every use of มันมี.

  • Not giving the requested location statement with อยู่.

    แมวมีในห้อง
    แมวอยู่ในห้อง

Use แมวอยู่ในห้อง for the requested statement locating the cat, with อยู่. แมวมีในห้อง may need a different topical or availability context. This is not a rule that every subject-first clause must use อยู่ or that มี is allowed only after a location.
