Negative Past Tense

Level 2Sounds Like negaciǰa u perfektu

To say that something did not happen in the past, use the negative auxiliary verb нисам / ниси / није / нисмо / нисте / нису combined with the active past participle (the -о / -ла / -ло form) of the main verb.

How It Works

In Serbian, past actions are normally expressed with the ordinary past tense. Negating this tense does not involve adding a standalone не before the auxiliary or the participle. Instead, Serbian uses a specialized fused auxiliary set:

  • 1st singular: нисам (I did not)
  • 2nd singular: ниси (you did not)
  • 3rd singular: није (he/she/it did not)
  • 1st plural: нисмо (we did not)
  • 2nd plural: нисте (you did not)
  • 3rd plural: нису (they did not)

Key Rules to Keep in Mind:
1. Participle Agreement: The participle must match the subject in grammatical gender and number via active participle agreement (masculine singular -о, feminine singular -ла, neuter singular -ло; masculine plural -ли, feminine plural -ле, neuter plural -ла).

2. Word Order Freedom: Because the negative forms are fully stressed words (orthotonic), they are not constrained to second position like enclitics. You can start directly with the auxiliary: Нисам видео, or include the pronoun: Ја нисам видео.

3. Reflexive Verbs: In the affirmative 3rd person singular, the auxiliary је is omitted next to се (e.g., Он се вратио). However, under negation, није is never omitted: Он се није вратио.

4. Fused Spelling: The negation is permanently attached to the auxiliary base. Writing *не сам or *не је is always incorrect.

Examples (5)

  1. Нисам знао за тај састанак.

I did not know about that meeting.

Word by Word: Not-am known for that meeting.

Demonstrates sentence-initial placement of the stressed auxiliary 'нисам' with a masculine singular participle.

  2. Ана јуче није дошла на предавање.

Ana didn't come to the lecture yesterday.

Word by Word: Ana yesterday not-is come to lecture.

Shows the 3rd person singular negative auxiliary 'није' paired with a feminine singular participle ('дошла').

  3. Ми нисмо купили тај стан.

We did not buy that apartment.

Word by Word: We not-are bought that apartment.

Demonstrates the 1st person plural negative auxiliary 'нисмо' with a masculine plural participle.

  4. Марко се јутрос није пробудио на време.

Marko didn't wake up on time this morning.

Word by Word: Marko self this-morning not-is woken on time.

Shows that unlike the affirmative perfect where 'је' drops next to 'се', 'није' is strictly retained with reflexive verbs.

  5. Зашто нисте позвали полицију?

Why didn't you call the police?

Word by Word: Why not-are called police?

Shows the 2nd person plural form 'нисте' used in a past question.

Common Mistakes

  • Separating the negative particle from the auxiliary verb (e.g. *не сам, *не је).

Ја не сам видео тај филм.
    Ја нисам видео тај филм.

Although 'не' is written separately from most Serbian verbs, the auxiliary forms of 'бити' are one of the specific exceptions where negation is always fused into a single word (нисам, ниси, није, нисмо, нисте, нису).

  • Omitting the auxiliary verb in the 3rd person singular with reflexive verbs.

    Он се не вратио кући.
    Он се није вратио кући.

Learners often remember that 'је' drops in affirmative reflexive sentences (Он се вратио), but in the negative past, 'није' is mandatory and must not be dropped or replaced with bare 'не'.

  • Using an infinitive instead of the active past participle after the negative auxiliary.

    Нисам разумети питање.
    Нисам разумео питање.

The negative auxiliary 'нисам' requires an agreeing active past participle (-о / -ла / -ло), never the dictionary infinitive form.

Negative Past TenseLevel 2

Learn This First

The negative past tense in Serbian is constructed by combining the negative present tense forms of the auxiliary verb 'бити' (нисам, ниси, није, etc.) with the active past participle, so learners need prior knowledge of both the general past tense construction and the negative auxiliary forms.
