Polite You in the Past
When speaking politely to a single person using polite 'ви' (equivalent to formal 'you'), the past tense verb always takes full masculine plural agreement. Use auxiliary 'сте' plus the past participle ending in '-ли', regardless of whether you are speaking to a man or a woman.
How It Works
In Serbian, addressing an individual politely requires the honorific second-person pronoun Ви / ви. In the ordinary past tense, this honorific shift requires complete grammatical agreement across the entire verb phrase.
1. Structure of the Polite Past:
The compound past tense consists of two parts:
- The second-person plural present auxiliary of бити: сте (negative: нисте, question: јесте ли / да ли сте).
- The active past participle (active participle): must end in masculine plural -ли.
2. Grammatical Agreement Overrides Biological Sex:
A common trap for learners is trying to match the participle to the real-world gender of the addressee (known as agreement ad sensum). Standard Serbian norm strictly rejects this for verbal participles:
- Addressing one man: Господине, ви сте стигли. (Correct)
- Addressing one woman: Госпођо, ви сте стигли. (Correct)
- *Госпођо, ви сте стигла or *стигле: Incorrect in standard Serbian.
The masculine plural suffix -ли functions as the generic, grammatically unmarked plural marker.
3. Standalone Adjectives vs. Predicate Nouns:
In standard Serbian norm, this plural agreement rule applies not only to past participles, but also to standalone predicate adjectives:
- Addressing a woman with a standalone adjective: Госпођо, ви сте љубазни. (Masculine plural; strictly required in the standard literary language).
- *Госпођо, ви сте љубазна is non-standard.
Natural singular gender agreement appears only when there is a predicate noun (or an attributive adjective modifying a singular noun):
- Госпођо, ви сте наша докторка. (Predicate noun remains feminine singular).
- Госпођо, ви сте љубазна особа. (Adjective modifies the singular noun особа).
4. Spelling and Capitalization:
Capitalizing Ви, Вас, and Вам is common in formal correspondence (emails, official letters). Capitalization is purely an orthographic mark of courtesy and does not alter the plural verb agreement.
Examples (4)
- Поштована госпођо Петровић, да ли сте прочитали мој извештај?
Dear Ms. Petrović, did you read my report?
Word by Word: Respected Mrs. Petrović, whether are [you] read [masc. pl.] my report?
Even though Ms. Petrović is a woman, the participle 'прочитали' must be in the masculine plural to agree with polite 'ви'.
- Извините, господине, нисте нас добро разумели.
Excuse me, sir, you did not understand us correctly.
Word by Word: Excuse [imperative], sir [vocative], not-are [you] us well understood [masc. pl.].
Negative statements combine the plural negative auxiliary 'нисте' with the plural participle ending in '-ли'.
- Јесте ли већ били у Београду раније?
Have you already been to Belgrade before?
Word by Word: Are [stressed] whether already been [masc. pl.] in Belgrade earlier?
Inverted yes-no questions use 'јесте ли' followed by the masculine plural participle 'били' when politely addressing one person.
- Професорка, зашто сте тако рано отишли из канцеларије?
Professor, why did you leave the office so early?
Word by Word: Professor [fem. vocative], why are [you] so early gone [masc. pl.] from office?
The vocative address 'професорка' is feminine singular, but polite agreement requires plural 'сте отишли'.
Common Mistakes
Using a feminine singular participle when politely addressing a woman.
Госпођо, да ли сте дошла јуче?Госпођо, да ли сте дошли јуче?Mixing the plural auxiliary 'сте' with a singular feminine participle (*дошла) violates Serbian standard grammar. The participle must be masculine plural ('дошли').
Using a feminine plural participle for a single female addressee.
Професорка, ви сте рекле да немамо час.Професорка, ви сте рекли да немамо час.The feminine plural ending '-ле' is only valid when addressing two or more women. When politely addressing one woman, always use masculine plural '-ли'.
Dropping the auxiliary 'сте' in polite past questions.
Ви дошли јуче?Да ли сте дошли јуче?Unlike Russian, standard Serbian compound past tenses require an auxiliary verb ('сте' or 'јесте'). Do not omit the auxiliary.
