Agreement With Complex Quantities
When a subject consists of a quantifying noun followed by a genitive plural noun (e.g., већина студената, део људи), standard Serbian allows two types of predicate agreement: grammatical agreement (the verb agrees with the head noun in gender and singular number) and semantic agreement (the verb agrees with the plural entities in the genitive).
How It Works
Complex subject structures trigger competing syntactic principles: grammatical agreement with the quantifier head vs. semantic agreement (ad sensum) with the dependent noun. Standard Serbian regulates these constructions based on the lexical and morphological type of the quantifying element.
1. Quantifying Nouns (количинске именице / квантификативне именице)
With quantifying nouns such as већина, мањина, део, or половина followed by a genitive complement, standard Serbian grammars describe two agreement strategies with clear register differences:
• Grammatical agreement: Matching the gender and singular number of the nominative head noun. Prescriptive authorities (e.g., Klajn, Stevanović, Piper & Klajn) designate this pattern as the primary, unmarked normative standard, strongly recommended and stylistically preferred in formal administrative, official, and academic prose:
- Већина грађана је подржала предлог. (Feminine singular, agreeing with већина)
- Велики део радника је ступио у штрајк. (Masculine singular, agreeing with део)
• Semantic agreement (ad sensum): Matching the plural number and natural gender of the genitive complement. This functions as an accepted standard alternative and widespread stylistic variant commonly encountered in journalistic, literary, and everyday cultivated language, especially when referring to human or animate participants:
- Већина грађана су подржали предлог. (Masculine plural, agreeing with грађана)
- Већина жена су подржале предлог. (Feminine plural, agreeing with жена)
Note: Default neuter singular agreement (*Већина грађана је подржало) is ungrammatical when an inflected nominative head noun like већина is used.
2. Compound Cardinal Numerals (сложени бројеви)
In compound numerals (сложени бројеви), agreement is strictly determined by the final numeral element:
• Ending in 1 (један): Requires singular agreement matching the gender of the quantified noun:
- Двадесет један такмичар је одустао од трке. (Masculine singular)
- Тридесет једна земља је потписала споразум. (Feminine singular)
• Ending in 2, 3, 4 (два, три, четири): Governs the paucal form (genitive singular in -а for masculine and neuter, nominative/accusative plural in -е for feminine). For masculine and neuter subjects, the normative predicate participle ending in formal Serbian is strictly the paucal -а (the masculine plural ending -и is non-standard in formal writing):
- Тридесет два човека су дошла на састанак. (Paucal ending -а is standard; *су дошли is non-standard in formal grammar)
- Двадесет три жене су стигле. (Feminine plural in -е)
• Ending in 5–0 (пет и више): Governs the genitive plural and canonically triggers default neuter singular agreement:
- Четрдесет пет људи је дошло на састанак.
3. Numeral Nouns (бројне именице)
Numeral nouns decline like regular substantives and govern a genitive plural complement:
• Feminine -a stems (хиљада, стотина, милијарда):
- Grammatical nominative singular agreement (primary formal standard): Хиљада људи је изашла на трг. (Feminine singular)
- Semantic plural agreement (acceptable stylistic variant): Хиљада људи су изашли на трг. (Masculine plural)
- Fossilized adverbial accusative in -у: When хиљаду or стотину appears as an invariable quantifier, predicate agreement is canonically default neuter singular: Хиљаду људи је дошло / је изашло на трг.
• Masculine consonant stems (милион, билион):
- Grammatical agreement (formal standard): Милион људи је изашао на улице. (Masculine singular)
- Semantic agreement: Милион људи су изашли на улице. (Masculine plural)
• Special personal nouns in -ица (e.g., неколицина):
Designating a group of male persons (parallel to двојица, тројица), неколицина permits both grammatical feminine singular and semantic plural concord:
- Grammatical feminine singular agreement: Неколицина пријатеља је дошла на прославу.
- Semantic plural agreement: Неколицина пријатеља су дошли на прославу. (or collective plural су дошла).
4. Cardinal Numerals 5 and Above (пет и више)
With indeclinable cardinal numerals from 5 upwards, the canonical grammatical baseline is default neuter singular:
- Canonical grammatical norm: Пет људи је дошло на састанак.
- Semantic plural alternative: Пет људи су дошли на састанак. / Пет жена су дошле.
Plural semantic agreement occurs primarily with human or animate referents in informal or journalistic registers, especially when an intervening clause or modifier separates the quantifier from the predicate.
5. Adverbs of Quantity (много, мало, неколико)
Indeclinable quantitative adverbs govern the genitive and trigger default neuter singular agreement on the predicate:
- Standard normative form: Много људи је дошло.
- Semantic plural agreement (frequent in spoken and journalistic prose with human referents): Много људи су дошли.
6. Consistency Across Coordinated Clauses
Maintain parallel agreement across conjoined verbs sharing the same quantity subject. Avoid switching arbitrarily between singular grammatical agreement and plural semantic agreement within the same clause structure.
Examples (6)
- Већина чланова одбора је гласала против новог предлога.
Most members of the board voted against the new proposal.
Word by Word: Majority of-members of-board is voted(fem.sg) against new proposal.
Grammatical agreement: the verb and participle agree strictly with the feminine singular noun 'већина'.
- Већина чланова одбора су гласали против новог предлога.
Most members of the board voted against the new proposal.
Word by Word: Majority of-members of-board are voted(masc.pl) against new proposal.
Semantic agreement: the predicate agrees with the semantic plurality and gender of 'чланова' (masculine plural).
- Велики део радника је ступио у штрајк рано ујутру.
A large part of the workers went on strike early in the morning.
Word by Word: Large part of-workers is stepped(masc.sg) into strike early in-morning.
Grammatical agreement: the verb agrees with the masculine singular noun 'део'.
- Велики део радника су ступили у штрајк рано ујутру.
A large part of the workers went on strike early in the morning.
Word by Word: Large part of-workers are stepped(masc.pl) into strike early in-morning.
Semantic agreement: the plural verb highlights the individual agency of the workers.
- Хиљада грађана се окупила испред зграде скупштине.
A thousand citizens gathered in front of the parliament building.
Word by Word: Thousand of-citizens self gathered(fem.sg) in-front-of building of-parliament.
Grammatical agreement with the numeral noun 'хиљада' treated as a feminine singular subject.
- Већина жена су гласале за представницу свог синдиката.
The majority of the women voted for their union representative.
Word by Word: Majority of-women are voted(fem.pl) for representative of-own union.
Semantic agreement with feminine plural 'жена': the active participle takes the feminine plural suffix '-ле'.
Common Mistakes
Overusing plural semantic agreement with quantity adverbs like 'неколико' or 'много' in formal writing where neuter singular is normative.
Неколико колега су отишли на ручак пре пола сата.Неколико колега је отишло на ручак пре пола сата.While plural agreement ('су отишли') can appear in colloquial or spoken contexts due to semantic pressure, standard normative grammar strongly prefers the impersonal neuter singular ('је отишло') with indeclinable quantity adverbs like 'неколико', 'много', and 'мало'.
Defaulting to masculine plural '-ли' when the dependent genitive noun is feminine.
Већина девојака су дошли на такмичење на време.Већина девојака су дошле на такмичење на време.When using semantic agreement with a genitive plural noun, the active participle must match that noun's natural grammatical gender. Since 'девојка' is feminine, the plural participle ending must be '-ле', matching 'девојака'.
Mixing grammatical singular and semantic plural agreement across coordinated clauses.
Већина студената је дошла на предавање и сели су у први ред.Већина студената је дошла на предавање и села у први ред.Standard syntax requires consistency within coordinated predicates sharing the same subject. Either maintain singular grammatical agreement across both verbs, or use plural semantic agreement for both.
