Meaning and Form in Agreement

Level 4Sounds Like slagan̂e po smislu i obliku

Agreement in Serbian can follow strict morphological shape (agreement by form, po obliku) or real-world natural characteristics (agreement by meaning, po smislu). Modifiers right next to the noun virtually always agree by form, while predicates and distant pronouns often agree by meaning.

How It Works

In Serbian grammar, agreement can follow morphological shape (ad formam / по облику) or natural sex and collective meaning (ad sensum / по смислу). Understanding the standard conventions across different noun categories is essential for correct usage:

1. Collective Nouns in -a (деца, браћа, господа)
• Attributive modifiers: Obligatorily follow grammatical form (feminine singular, matching женски род на -а): наша добра деца, његова браћа (never *наши добри деца).
• Predicates: Always take a plural finite auxiliary (су). With non-gendered collectives like деца, standard grammar requires the neuter plural participle ending -ла (Деца су дошла; *дошли is non-standard). With male collective nouns (браћа, господа), standard Serbian fully recognizes both agreement by form (Браћа су дошла) and agreement by natural sex (Браћа су дошли).

2. Male Nouns of the -a Declension (мушке именице на -а: судија, колега, вођа)
• In the singular, agreement is consistently masculine (тај добри судија је пресудио).
• The genuine clash between form and meaning occurs in the plural: learners can choose grammatical agreement in the feminine plural (те добре судије су пресудиле) or semantic agreement in the masculine plural (ти добри судије су пресудили), both of which are common in literary and standard usage.

3. Polite Address (учтиво Ви)
• When using polite Ви in the past tense, verbal participles must strictly adhere to the grammatical plural form of the pronoun (masculine plural: Госпођо, да ли сте дошли?; singular feminine *дошла is non-standard).
• In contrast, nominal predicates (nouns and descriptive adjectives identifying the person) strictly agree semantically with the natural gender: Госпођо, Ви сте наша нова директорка.

4. Quantified Subjects (количински субјекти)
• Collective numerals (петоро, шесторо) and indeclinable quantities formally govern neuter singular verb forms (Петоро студената је дошло). However, relative pronouns and coordinate clauses easily switch to semantic masculine/human plural agreement (...који су положили; ...а сви су се радовали).

Examples (5)

  1. Наша добра деца су се лепо играла у дворишту.

Our good children played nicely in the yard.

Word by Word: Our good children AUX REFL nicely played in yard.

Attributive modifiers (наша добра) must strictly agree with the feminine singular grammatical form of деца, whereas the predicate features a plural verb (су) and neuter plural participle ending -ла (играла).

  2. Његова браћа су стигла јуче, а можда ће и они доћи.

His brothers arrived yesterday, and maybe they will come too.

Word by Word: His brothers AUX arrived yesterday, and maybe will and they come.

For male collectives like браћа, both neuter plural agreement by grammatical form (браћа су стигла) and masculine plural agreement by semantic sex (браћа су стигли) are standardly accepted in Serbian.

  3. Те нове судије су донеле праведну одлуку.

Those new judges made a fair decision.

Word by Word: Those new judges AUX made fair decision.

In the plural of male nouns in -a (судија), grammatical agreement uses feminine plural forms (те нове судије... донеле), while semantic agreement allows masculine plural (ти нови судије... донели).

  4. Госпођо Петровић, Ви сте изванредна професорка и веома сте нам помогли.

Mrs. Petrović, you are an outstanding professor and you have helped us very much.

Word by Word: Mrs. Petrović, You AUX outstanding professor and very AUX us helped.

With polite Ви, the nominal predicate (изванредна професорка) agrees semantically with female gender, whereas the past participle (помогли) obligatorily follows the grammatical plural form of Ви.

  5. Петоро студената је положило испит, а сви су вредно учили.

Five students passed the exam, and all of them studied diligently.

Word by Word: Five students AUX passed exam, and all AUX diligently studied.

The collective numeral construction takes neuter singular agreement by grammatical form in its immediate predicate (је положило), but can license semantic plural agreement downstream (сви су учили).

Common Mistakes

  • Using masculine or neuter plural adjective endings directly before collective nouns in -a.

Ови деца се играју у парку.
Ова деца се играју у парку.

Attributive modifiers attached directly to collective nouns in -a must follow grammatical form (feminine singular), not semantic plural gender.

  • Using a feminine singular past participle when addressing a woman with polite Ви.

Госпођо, да ли сте рекла истину?
Госпођо, да ли сте рекли истину?

Standard Serbian requires the generic masculine plural participle (сте рекли) with respectful Ви, regardless of the addressee's biological gender.

  • Using a singular verb with collective plural nouns like деца.

    Деца је спавала целу ноћ.
    Деца су спавала целу ноћ.

Unlike true mass singular nouns, collective nouns like деца and браћа require plural verbs in the predicate.

Learn This First

To learn agreement according to meaning versus formal grammatical form (ad sensum vs. ad formam), learners need prior knowledge of noun classes and honorifics where morphology conflicts with natural gender or number, such as collective nouns ('деца', 'браћа'), masculine 'a'-stem nouns, and polite 'Ви'.
