Compound Number Agreement
In compound numbers (like 21, 34, 105), the modified noun, adjective, and verb agree entirely with the very last word pronounced: ending in 1 acts as singular, 2–4 uses paucal agreement, and 5–0 takes genitive plural with a neuter singular verb.
How It Works
When forming numbers above 20 in Serbian, multi-word cardinal numbers do not trigger agreement based on the grand total. Instead, the grammar is governed strictly by the final numeral pronounced.
1. Compounds ending in 1 (21, 31, 101... except 11):
For regular countable nouns, the numeral један/једна/једно inflects for gender to match the noun. The noun appears in the nominative singular, and the predicate verb is in the 3rd person singular. In compound tenses like the past tense (перфекат), the active past participle agrees in gender with the subject noun (masculine -о, feminine -ла, neuter -ло):
• двадесет један студент је положио (twenty-one students passed).
• двадесет једна студенткиња је положила (twenty-one female students passed).
• двадесет једно дете је дошло (twenty-one children arrived).
Note for plural-only nouns (именице само у множини): With pluralia tantum nouns like врата (door/doors), новине (newspaper/newspapers), or панталоне (trousers), plural forms of један (једни / једне / једна) are used. The noun and the predicate verb remain in the plural: двадесет једна врата су отворена (twenty-one doors are open). Note that compounds ending in 2–4 cannot combine directly with plural-only nouns (forms like *двадесет двоја do not exist); standard Serbian uses periphrastic phrasing instead, such as двадесет два комада панталона / врата.
2. Compounds ending in 2, 3, 4 (22–24, 32–34, 102–104... except 12–14):
The numeral два inflects for gender: masculine/neuter два (e.g. двадесет два студента) vs. feminine две (Ijekavian: двије; e.g. двадесет две жене). The noun appears in the paucal form: for masculine and neuter nouns, this ending is -а; for regular feminine -а nouns, it is -е; however, feminine consonant-stem nouns take -и in the paucal (e.g. двадесет две речи, тридесет три ствари). Adjectives take the paucal ending (-а for masc/neut, -е for fem). In the past tense, traditional formal grammatical agreement uses the neuter plural/paucal participle ending -а for masculine and neuter subjects (двадесет два радника су дошла) and -е for feminine subjects. Additionally, semantic agreement in the masculine plural -и with masculine animate nouns (двадесет два радника су дошли) is fully accepted by modern standard normative grammars.
3. Compounds ending in 5–0 and the teens 11–14:
Because the numbers 11 through 14 (једанаест, дванаест, тринаест, четрнаест) end with the suffix -наест rather than free digits 1–4, they group with 5 and above. They require a генитив множине noun. In the past tense, strict grammatical agreement takes the 3rd person neuter singular (impersonal: је + -ло):
• сто четрнаест људи је дошло (one hundred fourteen people came).
While semantic plural agreement with animate nouns (сто четрнаест људи су дошли) is common in everyday speech, the neuter singular remains the strictly preferred normative standard in formal writing and language exams.
Everyday Usage Note: While older literary styles declined compound numerals through cases, modern spoken Serbian treats multi-digit numbers as indeclinable, keeping them in the nominative shape or rephrasing with prepositions (e.g. са двадесет два студента).
Examples (5)
- Двадесет један студент је положио испит.
Twenty-one students passed the exam.
Word by Word: Twenty one student has passed exam.
Because the compound ends in 'један', the noun 'студент' and the verb 'је положио' stay in the singular.
- Тридесет два нова радника су дошла јуче.
Thirty-two new workers arrived yesterday.
Word by Word: Thirty two new workers are arrived yesterday.
Compounds ending in 2 take the paucal noun and adjective ('два нова радника') and standard neuter plural past participle ('су дошла').
- Четрдесет три жене су чекале ред.
Forty-three women were waiting in line.
Word by Word: Forty three women were waited turn.
Compounds ending in 3 with feminine nouns take the feminine paucal ending '-е' ('жене') and feminine plural verb ('су чекале').
- Педесет пет ученика учи енглески језик.
Fifty-five pupils are studying English.
Word by Word: Fifty five pupils studies English language.
Compounds ending in 5 take a genitive plural noun ('ученика') and a 3rd person singular verb ('учи').
- Сто четрнаест људи је присуствовало састанку.
One hundred fourteen people attended the meeting.
Word by Word: Hundred fourteen people has attended meeting.
Numbers ending in teen units like 'четрнаест' (14) govern genitive plural ('људи') and impersonal neuter singular verbs ('је присуствовало').
Common Mistakes
Using plural noun forms and plural verbs with compounds ending in 1.
Двадесет један студенти су дошли на час.Двадесет један студент је дошао на час.In Serbian, compound numerals ending in 'један' strictly demand a nominative singular noun and singular verb, unlike English 'twenty-one students came'.
Treating teen numbers (11–14) like unit numbers (1–4).
Сто дванаест човека је дошло.Сто дванаест људи је дошло.The numbers 11 through 14 do not end in 1–4; they end in '-наест' and trigger the genitive plural ('људи'), not the paucal form ('човека').
Failing to adjust 'два' for feminine gender in compound numbers.
Прочитао сам двадесет два књиге.Прочитао сам двадесет две књиге.Just like 'један / једна', the final digit 2 agrees in gender with the counted noun: use 'двадесет два' for masculine/neuter nouns, but 'двадесет две' (or 'двадесет двије') for feminine nouns.
How It Connects
Learn This First
Compound number agreement in Serbian is governed entirely by the final numeral in the compound (e.g., 21, 22, 25), with the exception of 11–14. Therefore, learners must understand how singular 'један', paucal 'два/три/четири', and higher numbers ('пет и више') each govern noun cases.
