quand

When Clauses

Level 2

Quand starts a clause that says when something happens.

How It Works

Quand means when. The clause after it has its own verb, and the whole sentence describes something that happens regularly.

OccitanEnglish
Quand plòu, legissi. When it rains, I read.
Quand ai fam, mangi. When I am hungry, I eat.
Cantam quand sèm amassa. We sing when we are together.

Put a comma when the quand clause comes first. Both orders mean the same. Do not write quant for when: quant means how much and has its own entry, and the two words sound alike. For a question, use quora: Quora arribas? Later, quand also goes with the future, for events that have not happened yet.

Examples (4)

  1. Quand plòu, legissi.

    When it rains, I read.

Both clauses use the present for a habit.

  2. Cantam quand sèm amassa.

We sing when we are together.

The quand clause can come last.

  3. Quand ai fam, mangi.

When I am hungry, I eat.

Each clause keeps its own verb.

  4. Quand Maria arriba, manjam.

    When Maria arrives, we eat.

The quand clause has its own subject.
