ja que, puèi que, coma
Since and as
Start the sentence with coma, ja que or puèi que to give a reason that everyone knows.
How It Works
| Word | Example | English |
|---|---|---|
| coma | Coma plòu, restam a l'ostal. | As it is raining, we stay at home. |
| ja que | Ja que sètz aicí, manjatz amb nosautres. | Since you are here, eat with us. |
| puèi que | Puèi que Joan es aicí, començam. | Since Joan is here, we start. |
These words give a reason the listener already knows. For a new reason, use perque after the main clause: Restam a l'ostal perque plòu.
Coma has other jobs. It means like or as in tan ... coma (as ... as). At the start of a sentence, followed by a clause, it gives a reason. With an imperfect it can also mean as, at the time: Coma passava davant l'escòla, ausiguèt un crit (As he was passing the school, he heard a cry).
The verb after these words is in the indicative. Do not use the French comme.
