Present of dire

Level 2

Dire (to say) is irregular in the present: disi, dises, ditz, disèm, disètz, dison.

How It Works

Dire means to say or to tell. The stem is dis-, and the third person singular is ditz.

Write ditz with a final -tz. The French form dit is not a present form in Occitan. Only the third person singular is different: the other persons keep the stem dis-.

Use que to connect what is said: Joan ditz que plòu (Joan says that it is raining). Dire also works with a greeting: Disèm bonjorn a la professora (We say hello to the teacher).

Examples (5)

  1. Qué ditz Maria?

    What does Maria say?

Ditz: the third person ends in -tz.

  2. Joan ditz que plòu.

Joan says that it is raining.

    Ditz que: dire plus que.

  3. Disèm bonjorn a la professora.

We say hello to the teacher.

Disèm: the stress is on the ending.

  4. Qué disètz?

    What are you saying?

    Disètz: the vos form.

  5. Dison que fa bon temps.

They say that the weather is nice.

    Dison: the plural.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the French form dit

    Joan dit que plòu.
    Joan ditz que plòu.

Dit is French. The third person of dire is ditz.
