tan ... coma

Level 2

Tan ... coma says that two things are equal: as ... as.

How It Works

Equal things are compared with tan ... coma. The adjective still agrees with the subject, and coma, not que, links the second thing.

OccitanEnglish
Joan es tan grand coma Maria.Joan is as tall as Maria.
Joan es tant aimable coma Maria.Joan is as kind as Maria.
Aimi Maria tant coma Joan.I love Maria as much as Joan.

The form tan goes before a word that starts with a consonant (tan grand), and tant goes before a vowel (tant aimable). After a verb, as in the third row, the form is tant. The unequal comparisons use mai ... que and mens ... que. A different pattern, tant ... que, gives a result and has its own entry.
