Reflexive Verbs in the Compound Past

Level 3

Pronoun + èsser + participle: Me soi levat.

How It Works

masculinefeminine
ieume soi levatme soi levada
tute ès levatte ès levada
el, elas'es levats'es levada
nosautresnos sèm levatsnos sèm levadas
vosautresvos sètz levatsvos sètz levadas
eles, elasse son levatsse son levadas

The pronoun stays before èsser, and se es becomes s'es. The negative follows the pattern you know: Me soi pas levat.

In English, I have got up uses have, but in Occitan the auxiliary is always èsser for these verbs: Me soi levat, never Ai levat.

Common Mistakes

  • Using aver with a reflexive verb.

    Me ai lavat.
    Me soi lavat.

Reflexive verbs take èsser, and the pronoun stays before it.

  • Leaving the participle unchanged for a woman.

    Maria s'es levat.
    Maria s'es levada.

The participle agrees with the subject.
