bonjorn, adieu
Hello and Goodbye
Bonjorn works with everyone. Adieu is for people you call tu.
How It Works
Two words cover most greetings.
| Say | To whom | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Bonjorn | anyone, during the day | hello, good day |
| Adieu | a person you call tu | hello or goodbye |
| Adieu-siatz | a person you call vos, or several people | hello or goodbye |
Adieu is not the standard French adieu, which means a final farewell. In Occitan it is a friendly word, and you can say it every time you meet or part.
Put a name after a comma: Bonjorn, Maria! Write bonjorn as one word. The evening greeting is two words: bon vèspre.
