उदाहरणार्थ is a written word. In speech, people say जसे की.

How It Works

First say the general point. Then give the example. अनेक सण साजरे होतात; उदाहरणार्थ, गणेशोत्सव आणि दिवाळी. (Many festivals are celebrated, for example Ganeshotsav and Diwali.)

उदाहरणार्थ is a formal word for essays, reports and notices. A comma follows it, and then the example comes as a noun, a list or a whole sentence. नियम सोपे असावेत; उदाहरणार्थ, अर्जाचा नमुना एका पानात असावा. (Rules should be simple; for example, the application form should fit on one page.)

Start a list with उदाहरणार्थ, and join the last two items with आणि: उदाहरणार्थ, पुरणपोळी आणि मोदक. In an exam answer or a lecture, you can also write उदा. as a short form.

The example needs no verb of its own: उदाहरणार्थ, गणेशोत्सव आणि दिवाळी ends the sentence by itself.

In speech and chats, the usual words are जसे की: मला सणांचे पदार्थ आवडतात, जसे की मोदक.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting the example before the general statement.

    उदाहरणार्थ comes after the general point, never before it.

    जैसे is Hindi. Marathi says उदाहरणार्थ or जसे की.
