Quarters and Halves

Level 2Sounds Like savvā / sāḍē / pāvaṇē / dīḍa / aḍīca

For 1:30 and 2:30, Marathi says दीड and अडीच, never साडेएक or साडेदोन.

How It Works

Read पावणे with care. पावणेआठ means a quarter before eight, so it is 7:45.

1:15सव्वाएक
1:30दीड
1:45पावणेदोन
2:15सव्वादोन
2:30अडीच

दीड and अडीच are single words that stand for 1:30 and 2:30. Every other hour uses साडे: साडेतीन, साडेचार, साडेआठ.

Add वाजता after the time: सव्वासात वाजता, दीड वाजता. For the clock now, add वाजले: साडेसात वाजले.

किती वाजले? is answered with साडेसात वाजले (it is 7:30). When the minute is not a quarter or half, say the full number: सात वाजून दहा मिनिटे (ten minutes past seven).

Learn the quarter before the hour as पावणे and the quarter after as सव्वा. Both words keep the hour number right after them.
