Marathi has no short rule, so the numbers between two tens have to be learned. Twenty-one and thirty-one start with एक: एकवीस, एकतीस. Twenty-five is पंचवीस and thirty-five is पस्तीस.

The Devanagari digits are standard in books and newspapers: ५०, ६०, १००. In print, prices and figures use digits: ५० रुपये. In speech and dialogue, numbers are words: पंचवीस मुले, पन्नास रुपये.

A counted noun is usually plural: वीस मुले, पंचवीस मुली. A drink counted in cups keeps its form: दोन चहा. Prices use रुपये after any number above one: पन्नास रुपये. For one, say एक रुपया.

Say the numbers aloud in a row: अकरा, बारा, तेरा, चौदा, पंधरा. Saying them often is the fastest way to learn the words between the tens.

    चाळीस is a single word for 40.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Hindi form पच्चीस.

    माझ्या वर्गात पच्चीस मुले आहेत.
    माझ्या वर्गात पंचवीस मुले आहेत.

    Marathi says पंचवीस.

  • Using the Hindi form बीस.

    मला बीस रुपये द्या.
    मला वीस रुपये द्या.

    Marathi says वीस.
