सर्वात / सगळ्यात

The Most

Level 3Sounds Like sarvāta / sagaḷyāta

Both words mean the same, and the describing word still matches the noun.

How It Works

Use सर्वात or सगळ्यात to point to the top of a group. They never change. The describing word after them follows the noun.

NounForm
किल्ला (masculine)सर्वात मोठा किल्ला
बस (feminine)सर्वात मोठी बस
शहर (neuter)सर्वात मोठे शहर

सर्वात is neutral. सगळ्यात is the spoken form that people use with family and friends.

A short describing word such as छान, उंच or हुशार does not change. सई वर्गात सगळ्यात हुशार आहे.

Add जास्त to say what you like or do most: मला सगळ्यात जास्त पावसाळा आवडतो. (I like the rainy season the most.)

सर्वात also goes before आधी: आजी सर्वात आधी उठतात. (Grandmother gets up before everyone.) It means earliest.

Name the group when you want to be exact: आमच्या वर्गात (in our class), या शहरात (in this city).
