-पेक्षा

Comparing Things

Level 3Sounds Like pēkṣā

The noun before -पेक्षा takes its changed form, and a describing word that changes matches the thing described.

How It Works

The first thing in the sentence is the subject, and the second thing takes -पेक्षा.

Second thingWith -पेक्षा
मुंबईमुंबईपेक्षा
मीमाझ्यापेक्षा
तूतुझ्यापेक्षा
तोत्याच्यापेक्षा
कालकालच्यापेक्षा

-पेक्षा joins the word. Words that end in -च्या, such as कालच्या, keep it.

A describing word that changes agrees with the subject: ही बस त्या बसपेक्षा मोठी आहे. बस is feminine, so मोठी.

Compare actions in the same way: तो माझ्यापेक्षा वेगाने चालतो. (He walks faster than I do.) The verb agrees with तो.

To say you like one more than another, add जास्त: मला चहापेक्षा कॉफी जास्त आवडते.

Describing words such as लहान, उंच and थंड do not change. Words that end in -ा, such as मोठा and चांगला, change with the noun: मोठा, मोठी, मोठे.
