-कडे
Toward Someone's Place
The noun takes its joining shape before -कडे, and that shape can look the same as the plain noun, as in आजीकडे. The ending is written as one word with it.
How It Works
| Person | With -कडे |
|---|---|
| आजी | आजीकडे |
| मामा | मामाकडे |
| डॉक्टर | डॉक्टरकडे |
| काका | काकांकडे |
| मी, तू | माझ्याकडे, तुझ्याकडे |
-कडे often goes with verbs of going and coming: जाणे, येणे. For a place, use -ला or -त: शाळेत जातो. For home or the village, घरी and गावी are used: घरी जातो. For a person, use -कडे.
It also means toward in the sense of a direction: तो आमच्याकडे पाहतो (he looks toward us).
With the same word, -कडे आहे shows that someone has something: माझ्याकडे सायकल आहे.
Words like काका and आजोबा take a respectful plural form: काकांकडे, आजोबांकडे. आजी and मामा often stay as they are: आजीकडे, मामाकडे.
A masculine or neuter plural noun takes -ांकडे: मित्रांकडे (at friends' place), मुलांकडे (to the children). A feminine plural that ends in -ी, like मैत्रिणी, takes -ींकडे: मैत्रिणींकडे.
-कडे also tells where someone stays: मी मावशीकडे राहतो (I stay at my aunt's). A man is speaking.
Both questions ask where: कुठे जाता? (where are you going?) and कोणाकडे जाता? (whose place are you going to?)
