-च्या

Of Before Endings

Level 2Sounds Like cyā

The owner noun takes -च्या, and the thing owned takes the ending.

How It Works

PlainWith an ending
सईचे घरसईच्या घरात
आईचा हातआईच्या हातात
शाळेची बसशाळेच्या बसमध्ये
मैत्रिणीचे पुस्तकमैत्रिणीच्या पुस्तकावर

Both nouns can change: the owner takes -च्या, and the thing owned takes its own ending.

Before a separate postposition such as मागे, पुढे or बाहेर, the owner noun also takes -च्या: शाळेच्या मागे (behind the school), घराच्या बाहेर (outside the house).

Compare the pronouns: माझ्या and तुझ्या have the same -या ending.

When a singular thing owned has no ending, -चा, -ची or -चे agrees with it as usual: सईचा भाऊ, सईची बहीण, सईचे घर.

Compare आजोबांचे घर (Grandpa's house) with आजोबांच्या घरी (at Grandpa's house).

A question shows the same pattern: ही कोणाच्या घराची किल्ली आहे? asks whose house the key belongs to.
