या / त्या
This and That Before Endings
The same या and त्या fit a masculine, feminine or neuter noun.
How It Works
| Plain | Before an ending | Example |
|---|---|---|
| हा / ही / हे | या | या घरात, या शाळेत |
| तो / ती / ते | त्या | त्या मुलाला, त्या दुकानात |
The word before the noun takes this shape, and the noun itself also changes: घर becomes घरात, मुलगा becomes मुलाला.
The same shape is used with a plural noun. या मुलांना is to these children, and त्या मुलांना is to those children.
With no ending, the plain forms stay: हा मुलगा, ती शाळा, ते घर.
When no noun follows, the pronoun forms are used: त्याला, तिला, यांना. Those forms are in a different entry.
The ending goes on the noun, and या or त्या stands before it as a separate word: या शाळेत (in this school).
