-च्या stays the same whatever the gender of the event.

How It Works

Say the event with -च्या, then the word that follows. परीक्षेच्या दरम्यान विद्यार्थ्यांना मोबाइल वापरता येणार नाही. (Students may not use mobiles during the exam.)

-च्या दरम्यान is about time: it names the stretch in which something happens. प्रवासाच्या दरम्यान सईची आणि मृणालची ओळख झाली. (Sai and Mrinal got to know each other during the journey.)

-च्या पार्श्वभूमीवर is about the reason behind an action. The event is coming, or it has just happened, and the action responds to it. गणेशोत्सवाच्या पार्श्वभूमीवर बंदोबस्त वाढवण्यात आला. (Security was increased ahead of Ganeshotsav.)

A plural event takes the same -च्या: सणांच्या दरम्यान, परीक्षांच्या पार्श्वभूमीवर.

The endings -ची and -चे do not appear here. In the two-word phrase the event always takes -च्या, whether it is feminine like परीक्षा or masculine like गणेशोत्सव. News also joins a short form without -च्या: परीक्षेदरम्यान.

In everyday speech, use -मध्ये or -च्या वेळी: दिवाळीत बाजारात खूप गर्दी असते. The long phrases fit news and reports best.

    -च्या पार्श्वभूमीवर gives the reason for the inspection.

  4. दिवाळीच्या दरम्यान बाजारात खूप गर्दी असते.

    The market is very crowded during Diwali.

    -च्या दरम्यान names the time of year.

  5. प्रवासाच्या दरम्यान सईची आणि मृणालची ओळख झाली.

    Sai and Mrinal got to know each other during the journey.

    -च्या दरम्यान names the time in which it happened.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the feminine ending -ची before दरम्यान.

    परीक्षेची दरम्यान विद्यार्थ्यांना मोबाइल वापरता येणार नाही.
    परीक्षेच्या दरम्यान विद्यार्थ्यांना मोबाइल वापरता येणार नाही.

    In the two-word phrase, the ending before दरम्यान is always -च्या.

  • Leaving out -च्या.

    परीक्षा दरम्यान विद्यार्थ्यांना मोबाइल वापरता येणार नाही.
    परीक्षेच्या दरम्यान विद्यार्थ्यांना मोबाइल वापरता येणार नाही.

    The event takes -च्या before दरम्यान.
