-बरोबर / -सोबत

With Someone

Level 2Sounds Like barōbara / -sōbata

Both words mean with and can replace each other.

How It Works

Say who comes along with the doer. Both words are used in Pune and Mumbai, in speech and in writing.

WordWith -बरोबर
मित्र (friend)मित्राबरोबर
मैत्रीण (friend, a girl)मैत्रिणीबरोबर
आईआईबरोबर
मीमाझ्याबरोबर
आम्हीआमच्याबरोबर
तुम्हीतुमच्याबरोबर

Watch the vowel in a word like मैत्रीण: the long ई becomes short before the ending, so you write मैत्रिणीबरोबर.

Both words also work with things: चहाबरोबर बिस्किटे means biscuits with tea.

Use them with any verb of doing together: जाणे, खेळणे, जेवणे, राहणे. For example, मुले आमच्याबरोबर जेवतात means the children eat with us.

A tool or a means takes -ने: चमच्याने खाणे means to eat with a spoon.

With a person, the pair says who goes along: मुले आईबरोबर बाजारात जातात. With food, it says what goes together: भाजीबरोबर भाकरी.

Common Mistakes

  • Writing the word apart and keeping the plain noun.

    मी मित्र बरोबर जातो.
    मी मित्राबरोबर जातो.

The noun takes its joining shape and the ending joins it.

  • Using माझे before -बरोबर.

    तू माझेबरोबर येतोस का?
    तू माझ्याबरोबर येतोस का?

Before -बरोबर, मी takes the joining shape माझ्या-.
