-शी

Talking to or with Someone

Level 2

A pronoun takes the same shape before -शी as before -बरोबर: माझ्याशी, तुझ्याशी, त्याच्याशी.

How It Works

Think of -शी as the ending for the other person in a talk or a quarrel. The person you only tell something takes -ला: मी सईला सांगितले. The person you talk with takes -शी: मी सईशी बोललो.

मीमाझ्याशी

तुम्हीतुमच्याशी

Respected people such as आजोबा usually take the plural shape, so you write आजोबांशी.

The verb decides the ending. सांगणे and विचारणे take -ला: मी सईला विचारले means I asked Sai. बोलणे takes -शी: मी सईशी बोललो means I had a talk with Sai. Other verbs of dealing with someone also take -शी: भांडणे and मैत्री करणे.

Set phrases with करणे also take -शी: सईशी मैत्री करणे (to make friends with Sai), तिच्याशी लग्न करणे (to marry her).
