भेटणे

Meeting Someone

Level 3Sounds Like bhēṭaṇē

भेटणे never takes -ने in the past, and its verb matches the person who meets.

How It Works

भेटणे does not behave like पाहणे or करणे in the past. It takes no -ने. The verb matches the person who meets: तो भेटला, ती भेटली, ते भेटले, मी भेटलो (a man) and मी भेटले (a woman).

Who meetsPast
he (तो)तो सईला भेटला.
she (ती)ती सईला भेटली.
I, a manमी सईला भेटलो.
I, a womanमी सईला भेटले.

The person met takes -ला: सईला, डॉक्टरांना, आजोबांना. When two people meet each other, no -ला is needed: आपण उद्या भेटू. (Let's meet tomorrow.) A place goes in -त or -वर: मंडईत भेटू, स्टेशनवर भेटू.

Compare भेटणे with पाहणे (to see). In the past, पाहणे takes -ने with third persons, and a neuter verb when the object has -ला: त्याने सईला पाहिले. भेटणे stays simple: तो सईला भेटला.

A chance meeting uses the same verb, and the person who is met can be the one with -ला: ती मला बाजारात भेटली. (She met me at the market.)
