-साठी

For Someone or a Purpose

Level 2Sounds Like sāṭhī

A pronoun changes shape before -साठी: माझ्यासाठी, तुझ्यासाठी, त्याच्यासाठी.

How It Works

-साठी never stands alone. It sits on the person or thing, like the endings -ला and -त.

WordWith -साठीMeaning
आईआईसाठीfor Mom
मुलेमुलांसाठीfor the children
मीमाझ्यासाठीfor me
तूतुझ्यासाठीfor you
तोत्याच्यासाठीfor him
कोणकोणासाठीfor whom

Use it for two ideas. The first is a person who gets or benefits from something: ही भेट तिच्यासाठी आहे. The second is a purpose: कामासाठी, अभ्यासासाठी, जेवणासाठी.

To say for doing something, use the verb form -ण्यासाठी, which you meet at Level 3.

-साठी also answers what for: कशासाठी? means for what? and आमच्यासाठी means for us.

-साठी and -ला look close but differ. -ला marks the person who receives: मी आईला फुले दिली. -साठी marks who the thing is meant for: मी आईसाठी फुले आणली.
