आत by itself means in or inside, and it is often used when you invite someone in: आत या.

How It Works

With a pronoun, the pronoun takes its special shape: माझ्यासमोर, त्याच्यासमोर.

Compare -समोर and -पुढे. -समोर means face to face, and -पुढे means ahead of.

For a simple inside, -त is shorter: घरात, खोलीत.

The usual pair for a house is घरात (inside the house) and घराबाहेर (outside the house).

आत and बाहेर can stand alone: मुले बाहेर आहेत (the children are outside).

They also tell the direction of a move: आत जा (go in), बाहेर या (come out).

-समोर also tells who you face. Respect for a person gives -ां: सरांसमोर (in front of the teacher).

Questions use कुठे: चावी कुठे आहे? Answer with the place word: चावी पिशवीच्या आत आहे.

मुले घराबाहेर खेळतात.
The children play outside the house.
-बाहेर joins घरा-.
चावी पिशवीच्या आत आहे.

-च्या आत means inside.
शाळेसमोर बस आहे.
There is a bus in front of the school.
