Relative Clauses with जे

Level 3Sounds Like jē ... sē

जे starts a clause that describes someone or something, and से can point back to it.

How It Works

जे is the relative word. It changes before a postposition in the same way as के: जे, जकरा (to whom), जकर (whose). से has the matching forms से, तकरा, तकर.

If the person is named, जे follows the noun: गुरप्रीत, जे एकटा फिल्म समीक्षक छथि, आइ आएल छथि. Here the clause adds a detail and the sentence does not need से.

When the clause comes first, से repeats the subject: जे मेहनति करैत अछि, से आगाँ बढ़ैत अछि (Whoever works hard gets ahead).

Agree the verb with the person you mean. For a respected person, use छथि, and for a plain one, अछि. The subject form जे does not change for respect. Its other forms have rare respected versions: जनिका, जनिक.

Do not use Hindi जो and वो. Maithili says जे and से.
