Things That Did Not Happen

Level 4Sounds Like jam̐ ... -̔itahum̐

The -ितहुँ and -ितथि forms describe what would have happened.

How It Works

Take the stem of the verb and add the ending.

SubjectEndingExample
हम, अहाँ-ितहुँजनितहुँ, अबितहुँ, करितहुँ
ओ (respected)-ितथिकहितथि, सुनितथि

Put जँ in the first clause and तँ in the second. Both verbs take the ending.

  • जँ हम जनितहुँ, तँ पहिने अबितहुँ। (If I had known, I would have come earlier.)
  • जँ ओ कहितथि, तँ हम करितहुँ। (If he had said so, I would have done it.)
  • जँ अहाँ पढ़ितहुँ, तँ पास करितहुँ। (If you had studied, you would have passed.)

The meaning is that the first thing did not happen, so the second did not happen either.

Do not use the simple past in these sentences. जँ हम जनलहुँ, तँ अएलहुँ would mean something else.

For a plain third person, speakers vary, so keep to हम, अहाँ and respected people at first.
