-ए / -हि for Emphasis

Stressing a Word with -ए

Level 3Sounds Like ē ā -hi (jōra)

Adding -ए or -हि to a word stresses it.

How It Works

The ending keeps the meaning of the word and adds "exactly" or "only".

WordStressedMeaning
आइआइएthis very day
भोरभोरेearly in the morning
एखनएखनेright now
ओतयओतहिright there
हमरहमरेmy own

It works in many places: ई हमरे किताब अछि (This is my own book). अहाँ एखने आउ (Come right now).

The stress sits on the word with the ending. Compare तँ, which sets a word apart as a topic.

This ending is a different thing from the verb ending -ए in जाए. It is usually added to a noun, a pronoun, a time word or a place word.

Hindi uses the word ही. Maithili adds the ending directly to the word.

Examples (5)

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Hindi ही as a separate word.

    हम आइ ही जाएब।
    हम आइए जाएब।

ही is a separate Hindi word. Maithili adds the ending to the word.
